Yeah, this next segment is a company we've been following. They got some news we're gonna get into. Managing Kubernetes life cycle has been a huge challenge when you've got large organizations, whether you're spinning up and scaling scale is the big story. Kubernetes is the center of the conversation. This next segment's gonna be great. It >>Is. We've got two guests from Specter Cloud here. Please welcome. It's CEO Chenery Fu and co-founder and it's c g a co-founder Sta Mallek. Guys, great to have you on the program. Thank >>You for having us. My pleasure. >>So Timary, what's going on? What's the big news? >>Yeah, so we just announced our Palace three this morning. So we add a bunch, a new functionality. So first of all we have a Nest cluster. So enable enterprise to easily provide Kubernete service even on top of their existing clusters. And secondly, we also support seamlessly migration for their existing cluster. We enable them to be able to migrate their cluster into our CNC for upstream Kubernete distro called Pallet extended Kubernetes, GX K without any downtime. And lastly, we also add a lot of focus on developer experience. Those additional capability enable developer to easily onboard and and deploy the application for. They have test and troubleshooting without, they have to have a steep Kubernetes lending curve. >>So big breaking news this morning, pallet 3.0. So you got the, you got the product. This is a big theme here. Developer productivity, ease of use is the top story here. As developers are gonna increase their code velocity cuz they're under a lot of pressure. This infrastructure's getting smarter. This is a big part of managing it. So the toil is now moving to the ops. Steves are now dev teams. Security, you gotta enable faster deployment of apps and code. This is what you guys solve while you getting this right. Is that, take us through that specific value proposition. What's the, what are the key things on in this news release? Yeah, >>You're exactly right. Right. So we basically provide our solution to platform engineering ship so that they can use our platform to enable Kubernetes service to serve their developers and their application ship. And then in the meantime, the developers will be able to easily use Kubernetes or without, They have to learn a lot of what Kubernetes specific things like. So maybe you can get in some >>Detail. Yeah. And absolutely the detail about it is there's a big separation between what operations team does and the development teams that are using the actual capabilities. The development teams don't necessarily to know the internals of Kubernetes. There's so much complexity when it comes, comes into it. How do I do things like deployment pause manifests just too much. So what our platform does, it makes it really simple for them to say, I have a containerized application, I wanna be able to model it. It's a really simple profile and from there, being able to say, I have a database service. I wanna attach to it. I have a specific service. Go run it behind the scenes. Does it run inside of a Nest cluster? Which we'll talk into a little bit. Does it run into a host cluster? Those are happen transparently for >>The developer. You know what I love about this? What you guys are doing in the news, it really points out what I love about DevOps. Because cloud, let's face a cloud early adopters, we're all the hardcore cloud folks as it goes mainstream. With Kubernetes, you start to see like words like platform engineering. I mean I love that term. That means as a platform, it's been around for a while. For people who are building their own stuff, that means it's gonna scale and enable people to enable value, build on top of it, move faster. This platform engineering is becoming now standard in enterprises. It wasn't like that before. What's your eyes reactions that, How do you see that evolving faster? Or do you believe that or what's your take on >>It? Yeah, so I think it's starting from the DevOps op team, right? That every application team, they all try to deploy and manage their application under their own ING infrastructure. But very soon all these each application team, they start realize they have to repeatedly do the same thing. So these will need to have a platform engineering team to basically bring some of common practice to >>That. >>And some people call them SREs like and that's really platform >>Engineering. It is, it is. I mean, you think about like Esther ability to deploy your applications at scale and monitoring and observability. I think what platform engineering does is codify all those best practices. Everything when it comes about how you monitor the actual applications. How do you do c i CD your backups? Instead of not having every single individual development team figuring how to do it themselves. Platform engineer is saying, why don't we actually build policy that we can provide as a service to different development teams so that they can operate their own applications at scale. >>So launching Pellet 3.0 today, you also had a launch in September, so just a few weeks ago. Talk about what these two announcements mean from Specter Cloud's perspective in terms of proof points, what you're delivering to the end users and the value that they're getting from that. >>Yeah, so our goal is really to help enterprise to deploy and around Kubernetes anywhere, right? Whether it's in cloud data center or even at Edge locations. So in September we also announce our HV two capabilities, which enable very easy deployment of Edge Kubernetes, right at at at any any location, like a retail stores restaurant, so on and so forth. So as you know, at Edge location, there's no cloud endpoint there. It's not easy to directly deploy and manage Kubernetes. And also at Edge location there's not, it's not as secure as as cloud or data center environment. So how to make the end to end system more secure, right? That it's temper proof, that is also very, very important. >>Right. Great, great take there. Thanks for explaining that. I gotta ask cuz I'm curious, what's the secret sauce? Is it nested clusters? What's, what's the core under the hood here on 3.0 that people should know about it's news? It's what's, what's the, what's that post important >>To? To be honest, it's about enabling developer velocity. Now how do you enable developer velocity? It's gonna be able for them to think about deploying applications without worrying about Kubernetes being able to build this application profiles. This NEA cluster that we're talking about enables them, they get access to it in complete cluster within seconds. They're essentially having access to be able to add any operations, any capabilities without having the ability to provision a cluster on inside of infrastructure. Whether it's Amazon, Google, or OnPrem. >>So, and you get the dev engine too, right? That that, that's a self-service provisioning in for environments. Is that, Yeah, >>So the dev engine itself are the capabilities that we offer to developers so that they can build these application profiles. What the application profiles, again they define aspects about, my application is gonna be a container, it's gonna be a database service, it's gonna be a helm chart. They define that entire structure inside of it. From there they can choose to say, I wanna deploy this. The target environment, whether it becomes an actual host cluster or a cluster itself is irrelevant to them. For them it's complete transparent. >>So transparency, enabling developer velocity. What's been some of the feedback so far? >>Oh, all developer love that. And also same for all >>The ops team. If it's easy and goods faster and the steps >>Win-win team. Yeah, Ops team, they need a consistency. They need a governance, they need visibility, but in the meantime, developers, they need the flexibility then theys or without a steep learning curve. So this really, >>So So I hear a lot of people say, I got a lot of sprawl, cluster sprawl. Yeah, let's get outta hand does, let's solve that. How do you guys solve that problem? Yeah, >>So the Neste cluster is a profit answer for that. So before you nest cluster, for a lot of enterprise to serving developers, they have to either create a very large TED cluster and then isolated by namespace, which not ideal for a lot of situation because name stay namespace is not a hard isolation and also a lot of global resource like CID and operator does not work in space. But the other way is you give each developer a separate, a separate ADE cluster, but that very quickly become too costly. Cause not every developer is working for four, seven, and half of the time your, your cluster is is a sit there idol and that costs a lot of money. So you cluster, you'll be able to basically do all these inside the your wholesale cluster, bring the >>Efficiency there. That is huge. Yeah. Saves a lot of time. Reduces the steps it takes. So I take, take a minute, my last question to you to explain what's in it for the developer, if they work with Spec Cloud, what is your value? What's the pitch? Not the sales pitch, but like what's the value pitch that >>You give them? Yeah, yeah. And the value for us is again, develop their number of different services and teams people are using today are so many, there are so many different languages or so many different libraries there so many different capabilities. It's too hard for developers to have to understand not only the internal development tools, but also the Kubernetes, the containers of technologies. There's too much for it. Our value prop is making it really easy for them to get access to all these different integrations and tooling without having to learn it. Right? And then being able to very easily say, I wanna deploy this into a cluster. Again, whether it's a Nest cluster or a host cluster. But the next layer on top of that is how do we also share those abilities with other teams. If I build my application profile, I'm developing an application, I should be able to share it with my team members. But Henry saying, Hey Tanner, why don't you also take a look at my app profile and let's build and collaborate together on that. So it's about collaboration and be able to move >>Really fast. I mean, more develops gotta be more productive. That's number one. Number one hit here. Great job. >>Exactly. Last question before we run out Time. Is this ga now? >>Hey everyone. Welcome back to Miami. Lisa Martin here live with the Cube at IFS Unleashed 2022. We're so excited to be here. We just had a great conversation with Ifss, CEO of Darren Rouse. Now we've got another exciting conversation. F1 is here. You know how much I love f1. Christian Peterson joins us as well, the Chief Product Officer at ifs, and Sean Edwards IT business partner at Aston Martin. F1. Guys, it's great to have you on the program. Thank you for having >>Us. Thank you >>Very much. We were talking about F one. We probably could have an entire conversation just on that, but Christian, I wanna talk with you. It's been three years since the Cube has covered ifs obviously for obvious reasons during that time. So much momentum has happened. IFS cloud was launched about 18 months ago. Give our audience an o, a flavor of IFS, cloud and some of the milestones that you've hit in such a short time period. >>Yeah, I mean IFS cloud is really transformational in many ways. It's transformational for first and foremost for our customers in what enables them to do, but also transformational for us from a technology perspective, how we work and how we do everything. And at the end of the day, it has really surfaced, served around the the, the fact of what we need to do for our customers. And what we saw our customers often do back then, or any company, was they were out looking for EAP solutions or FSM Solutions or EAM Solutions or what have you. And then they were trying to stitch it all together and we, we said like, Hang on a second, these these traditional software s, those are some that I'm guilty. You know, there's some that we actually invented over the years together with analysts. So we invented EER P and we invented CRM and EAM and all these different things. >>But at the end of the day, customers really want a solution to what they are, they are what they're dealing with. And so in these conversations it became very clear that and very repeated conclusions from the conversations that customers wanted something that could manage and help them optimize the use of their assets. Regardless of what industry you're in, assets is such a key component. Either you are using your assets or you're producing assets. Second thing is really get the best use of of your people, your teams and your crew. How do you get the right people on the right job at the same time? How do you assemble the right crew with the right set of skills in the crew? Get them to the right people at the same time. So, and then the final thing is of course customers, you know all the things that you need to do to get customers to answer these ultimate questions, Will you buy from this company again? And they should say yes. That's the ultimate results of moments of service. So that's how we bring it all together and that's what we have been fast at work at. That's what IFS cloud is all about. >>And you, you talked about IFS cloud, being able to to help customers, orchestrate assets, people, customers, Aston Martin being one of those customers. Shawn, you came from ifs so you have kind of the backstory but just give the audience a little bit of, of flavor of your role at Aston Martin and then let's dig into the smart factory. >>Sure. So I previously worked at IFS as a manufacturing consultant. So my bread and butter is production planning in the ERP sector. So we, I Aston Martin didn't have an ERP system pre IFS or a legacy system that wasn't working for them and the team couldn't rely upon it. So what we did was bring IFS in. I was the consultant there and as IFS always preached customer first, well customer first did come and I jumped to support the team. So we've implemented a fully RP solution to manage the production control and the material traceability all the way through from design until delivery to track. And we've mo most recently implemented a warehouse solution at Trackside as well. So we are now tracking our parts going out with the garage. So that's a really exciting time for RFS. In terms of the smart factory, it's not built yet. >>We're we're supposed to move next year. So that's really exciting cause we're quadrupling our footprint. So going from quite a small factory spread out across the North Hampton Share countryside, we're going into one place quadruple in our footprint. And what we're gonna start looking at is using the technology we're implementing there. So enabling 5G to springboard our IFFs implementations going forward with the likes of Internet of things to connect our 15 brand new CMC machines, but also things like R F I D. So that comes with its own challenges on a Formula One car, but it's all about speed of data capture, single point of truth. And IFFs provides that >>And well, Formula One, the first word that comes to mind is speed. >>Absolutely. Second >>Word is crazy. >>We, we are very unique in terms of most customers Christian deals with, they're about speed but also about profit and efficiency. That doesn't matter to us. It is all about time. Time is our currency and if we go quicker in designing and manufacturing, which ifs supports ultimately the cargo quicker. So speed is everything. >>And and if we, if we think of of people, customers and assets at Asset Martin F one, I can't, I can't imagine the quantity of assets that you're building every race weekend and refactoring. >>Absolutely. So a Formula one car that drives out of the garage is made up of 13,000 car parts, most of which, 50% of which we've made in house. So we have to track that all the way through from the smallest metallic component all the way up to the most complex assembly. So orchestrating that and having a single point of truth for people to look at and track is what IFFs has provided us. >>Christian, elaborate on that a little bit in terms of, I mean, what you're facilitating, F1 is such a great example of of speed we talked about, but the fact that you're setting up the car every, every other weekend maybe sometimes back to back weeks, so many massive changes going on. You mentioned 50% of those 13,000 parts you manufacture. Absolutely. Talk about IFS as being a catalyst for that. >>I mean the, it's, it's fascinating with Formula One, but because as a technology geek like me, it's really just any other business on steroids. I mean we talk, we talk about this absolutely high tech, super high tech manufacturing, but even, even before that, the design that goes in with CFDs and how you optimize for different things and loose simulation software for these things goes into manufacturing, goes into wind tunnels and then goes on track. But guess what, when it's on track, it's an asset. It's an asset that streams from how many sensors are on the car, >>I think it's over 10,000 >>Sensors, over 10,000 sensors that streams maybe at 50 hertz or 50 readings. So every lap you just get this mountain of data, which is really iot. So I always say like F one if one did IOT before anybody invented the term. >>Absolutely. >>Yep. You know, F1 did machine learning and AI before anybody thought about it in terms of pattern recognition and things like that with the data. So that's why it's fascinating to work with an organization like that. It's the, it's the sophistication around the technologies and then the pace what they do. It's not that what they do is actually so different. >>It is, it absolutely isn't. We just have to do it really quickly. Really >>Quickly. Right. And the same thing when you talk about parts. I mean I was fascinated of a conversation with, with one of your designers that says that, you know, sometimes we are, we are designing a part and this, the car is now ready for production but the previous version of that part has not even been deployed on the car yet. So that's how quick the innovation comes through and it's, it's, it's fascinating and that's why we like the challenge that Esther Martin gives us because if we can, if we can address that, there's a lot of businesses we can make happy with that as far, >>So Sha I talk a little bit about this is, so we're coming up, there's what four races left in the 2022 season, but this is your busy time because that new car, the 23 car needs to be debuted in what February? So just a few months time? >>Absolutely. So it's a bit cancer intuitive. So our busiest time is now we're ramping up into it. So we co, we go into something called car build which is from December to December to February, which is our end point and there's no move in that point. The car has gotta go around that track in February. So we have got to make those 13,000 components. We've gotta design 'em, we've gotta make 'em and then we've gotta get 'em to the car in February for our moment of service. They said it on stage. Our moment of service as a manufacturing company is that car going around the track and we have to do it 24 times next year and we've gotta start. Well otherwise we're not gonna keep up. >>I'm just gonna ask you what a, what a moment, what's a moment of service in f1 and you're saying basically getting that >>Functional car >>On the track quickly, as quickly as possible and being able to have the technology underpinning that's really abstracting the complexity. >>Absolutely. So I would say our customer ultimately is the driver and the fans they, they need to have a fast car so they can sport it and they ultimately drive it around the track and go get first place and be competitive. So that is our moment of service to our drivers is to deliver that car 24 times next year. >>I imagine they might be a little demanding >>They are and I think it's gonna be exciting with Alonzo coming in, could the driver if we've gotta manage that change and he'll have new things that he wants to try out on a car. So adds another level of complexity to that. >>Well how influential are the drivers in terms some of the, the manufacturing? Like did they, are they give me kind of a a sense of how Alon Fernando Alanzo your team and ifs maybe collaborate, maybe not directly but >>So Alonzo will come in and suggest that he wants cars to work a certain way so he will feed back to the team in terms of we need this car, we need this car part to do this and this car part to do that. So then we're in a cycle when he first gets into the car in that February, we've then gotta turnaround car parts based off his suggestions. So we need to do that again really quickly and that's where IFS feeds in. So we have to have the release and then the manufacturer of the component completely integrated and that's what we achieve with IFFs and >>It needs to be really seamless. >>Absolutely. If, if we don't get it right, that car doesn't go out track so there's no moving deadline. >>Right. That's the probably one of the industries where deadlines do not move. Absolutely. We're so used to things happening in tech where things shift and change and reorgs, but this is one where the dates are set in their firm. >>Absolutely. And we have to do anything we can do to get that car on the track. So yeah, it's just a move. >>Christian, talk about the partnership a little bit from your standpoint in terms of how influential has Aston Martin F1 been in IFS cloud and its first 18 months. I was looking at some stats that you've already gotten 400,000 plus users in just a short time period. How influential are your customers in the direction and even the the next launch 22 R too? >>I mean our customers do everything plain and simple. That's that's what it is. And we have, we have a partnership, I think about every single customer as a partner of ours and we are partnering in taking technology to the next level in terms of, of the outputs and the benefits it can create for our customers. That's what it's all, all about. And I, I always think about these, these three elements I think I mentioned in our state as well. I think the partnership we have is a partnership around innovation. Innovation doesn't not only come from IFS or the technology partner, it comes from discussions, requirements, opportunities, what if like all these things. So innovation comes from everywhere. There's technology driven innovation, there's customer driven innovation, but that's part of the partnership. The second part of the partnership is inspiration. So with innovation you inspire. So when you innovate on something new that inspires new innovation and new thinking and that's again the second part of the partnership. And then the third part is really iterate and execute, right? Because it's great that we can now innovate and we can agree on what we need to do, but now we need to put it into products, put it in technology and put it into actual use. That's when the benefits comes and that's when we can start bringing the bell. >>And I think it's really intrinsically linked. I mean if you look at progress with Formula One teams and their innovation, it's all underpinned by our technology partners and that's why it's so important. The likes of Christian pushes the product and improves it and innovates it because then we can realize the benefits and ultimately save time and go faster. So it's really important that our, our partners and certainly inform one, push the boundaries and find that technology. >>And I think one of the things that we also find very, very important is that we actually understand our customers and can talk the language. So I think that was one of the key things in our engagement, Martin from the beginning is that we had a set of people that really understand Formula One felt it on their bodies and can have the conversation. So when the Formula One teams they say something, then we actually understand what we're talking about. So for instance, when we talk about, you know, track side inventory, well it's not that different from what a field service technician have in his van when he goes service. The only difference is when you see something happening on track, you'll see the parts manager go out to the pit lane with a tablet and say like, oh we need this, we need that, we need this and we need that. And then we'll go back and pick it and put it on the car and the car is service and maintain and off go. Absolutely. >>Yeah that speed always impresses me. >>It's unbelievable. >>Shannon, last question for you. From a smart factory perspective, you said you're moving in next year. What are some of the things that you are excited about that you think are really gonna be transformative but IFS is doing? >>So I think what I'm really excited about once we get in is using the technology they've already put in terms of 5G networks to sort of springboard that into a further IFS implementation. Maybe IFFs cloud in terms of we always struggle to keep the system up to date with, with what's physically happening so that the less data entry and the more automatic sort of data capture, the better it is for the formula on team cuz we improve our our single point of truth. So I'm really excited to look at the internet of things and sort of integrate our CNC machines to sort of feed that information back into ifs. But also the RFID technology I think is gonna be a game changer when we go into the new factory. So really >>Excited. Excellent. Well well done this year. Asset Martin F one, I can't, I can't imagine the quantity of assets that you're building So we have to track that all the way through from the Christian, elaborate on that a little bit in terms of, I mean, what you're facilitating, high tech, super high tech manufacturing, but even, even before that, the design that goes in with So I always say like F one if one did IOT before anybody invented the term. So that's why it's fascinating to work with an organization We just have to do it really quickly. And the same thing when you talk about parts. the track and we have to do it 24 times next year and we've gotta start. that's really abstracting the complexity. So that is our moment of service to our drivers is So adds another level of complexity So we have to have the release and then the manufacturer of the component completely If, if we don't get it right, that car doesn't go out track so there's no moving That's the probably one of the industries where deadlines do not move. And we have to do anything we can do to get that car on the track. Christian, talk about the partnership a little bit from your standpoint in terms of how influential has So with innovation you inspire. The likes of Christian pushes the product and improves it and innovates it because then we can realize the benefits Martin from the beginning is that we had a set of people that really understand Formula One What are some of the things that you are excited about that you think are really gonna be transformative but IFS is doing? I'm John for a host of the Cube with stewed Minutemen. Analysts were looking angle. The Cube are next to guest Tom Anderson and most product owner. Red Hat is part of the sensible platform automation properly announced. And Richard Henshaw, product manager. Guys, welcome to the Cube Way had all the execs on yesterday and some customers all pretty jazzed up about this year, mainly around just the timing of how automation is really hitting the scene and some of the scale that's going on. You guys had big news with the answerable automation platform. New addition to the portfolio. What's the feedback? >>So far, I think the feedback has been super positive. We have customers have come to us. A lot of the last little one said, Hey, we're maturing. We're moving along the automation maturity curve, right, and we have multiple teams coming to us and saying, Hey, can you help us connect this other team? We've had a lot of success doing cloud provisioning or doing network automation were doing security automation. What have you and they're coming to us and saying, Help us give us kind of the story if you will, to be able to connect these other teams in our organization. And so that way I kind of feel the pole for this thing to move from a tool that automates this or that. This task for that task. Too much more of a platform center. >>It seems to be scaling out in terms of what automation is touching these days. And look at the numbers six million plus activations on get Hub versus other projects. So activities high in the community. But this seems to be much more broader. Scope now. Bring more things together. What's the rationale behind? What's the reasoning? What's the strategy? But the main thing is, >>automation is got to that point where it's becoming the skill set that we do. So it was always the focus. You know, I'm a database administrator. I'm assists out, man. I'm a middle where I'm a nap deaf on those people, then would do task inside their job. But now we're going to the point off, actually, anybody that can see apiece. Technology can automate piece technology in the clouds have shown This is the way to go forward with the things what we had. We bring that not just in places where it's being created from scratch, a new How do you bring that into what's existing? Because a lot of our customers have 20 or 30 years like a heritage in the I T estate. How do you do with all of that? You can't just rebuild everything into new as well. So you gotta be ableto automate across both of those areas and try and keep. You know, we say it's administrative efficiency versus organization effectiveness. Now how do I get to the point of the organization? Could be effective, supposed just doing things that make my job easier. And that's what we're gonna bring with applying automation capability that anybody can take advantage of. >>Richard. I actually felt the keynote demo this morning did a nice job of that line that they set it up with is this is this is tools that that all the various roles and teams just get it, and it's not the old traditional okay, I do my piece and set it up and then throw it over the wall. There was that, you know? Oh, I've got the notification and then some feedback loops and, you know, we huddled for something and it gets done rather fast, not magic. It's still when I get a certain piece done. Okay, I need to wait for it's actually be up and running, but you know, you're getting everybody into really a enterprise collaboration, almost with the tool driving those activities together >>on that. And that's why yesterday said that focus on collaboration is the great thing. All teams need to do that to be more successful because you get Maur inclusivity, Maurin puts. But organizations also need to coordinate what activities they're doing because they have rules, regulations, structures and standards they have to apply. Make sure that those people can do things in a way that's guided for them so that they're they're effective at what they're trying to do. >>Okay, I think I'm going to explain what's in the platform first because an engine and tower and there, what else is in there, what's new? What's what our customers is going to see. That's new. That's different >>it's the new components are automation Hope Collections, which is a technology inside answer ball itself. On also Automation Analytics and the casing is that engine and terrorist of the beating heart of the platform. But it's about building the body around the outside. So automation is about discover abilities like, What can we find out? What automation can I do that I'm allowed to do? Um, and let six is about the post activity. So I've automated all these things. I've done all this work well, How did it go? Who did what, who did? How much of what? How well did it work? How much did it failed? Succeeds and then, once you build on that, you don't start to expand out into other areas. So what? KP eyes, How much of what I do is automated versus no automated? You can start to instigate other aspects of business change, then Gamification amongst teams. Who's the Who's the boat? The closest motive here into the strategy input source toe How? >>Find out what's working right, essentially and sharing mechanism to for other groups in terms of knowing what's happening >>and how is my platform performing which areas are performing well, which airs might not be performing well. And then, as we move down the road, kind of how my performing against my peers are other organizations that are automating using the ants will automation platform doing? And am I keeping up on my doing better? That kind of stuff. >>So, Tom, there's a robust community as we was talking about. Their platform feels like it builds on yet to change the dynamic a little bit. When you talk about the automation hub and collections, you've already got a long list of the ecosystem vendors that are participating here. Bring us two through a little bit. What led Thio. You know all these announcements and where you expect, you know, how would this change the dynamics of >>the body? And maybe we'll split up that question. I'll talk a little bit about partners because it's both partners and customers in community here that's been driving us this way. I'll talk a little bit about partners and Rich talk about the customer piece here, which is partners have been traditionally distributing their content there. Ansel automation content through our engine capability. So our engine release cycle, or cadence, has been sort of the limiting factor to how fast they can get content out to their users and what what the collections does is part of the platforms allows us to separate those things. Rich talked about it yesterday in his keynote, having that stable platform. But you having yet having content be able to read fast. And our partners love that idea because they can content. They can develop content, create content, get into their users hands faster. So partners like at five and Microsoft you've seen on stage here are both huge contributors. And they've been part of the pole for us to get to the platform >>from a customer perspective. And the thing I love most about doing this job with the gas of customers is because I was a customer on Guy was danceable customer, and then I came over to this side on Dhe. I now go and see customers. I see what they've done, and I know what that's what I want to do. Or that's what I was trying to do. And she started to see those what people wanted to achieve, and I was said yesterday it is moving away from should I automate. How would we automate Maura? What should I automate? And so we'll start to see how customers are building their capabilities. And there's no there's many different ways people do. This is about different customers, >>you know. What's interesting is you guys have such a great success formula first. Well, congratulations. It's great to see how this is turning into such a wider market, because is not just the niche configuration management. More automation become with cloud to point a whole new wider category. So congratulations. The formula we see with success is good product, community customers adopting and then ecosystem that seems to be the successful former in these kinds of growth growth waves you guys experiencing? What is the partnering with you mentioned? S five Microsoft? Because that, to me, is gonna be a tipping point in a tel sign for you guys because you got the community. You got the customers that check check ecosystem. What's the partner angle? How do they involve? Take us through that. What's going on? They're >>so you're absolutely so you know, kind of platform velocity will be driven by partner adoption and how many things customers can automate on that platform or through that platform and for us I mean, the example was in the demo this morning where they went to the automation hub and they pulled down the F five collection, plugged it into a workflow, and they were automating. What are partners? Experience through their customers is Look, if I'm a customer, I have a multi cloud environment or hybrid cloud environment. I've got automation from AWS. I've got azure automation via more automation. Five. Got Sisko. I've got Palo Alto. I've got all these different automation tools to try and string them together, and the customers are coming and telling those vendors Look, we don't want to use your automation to end this automation tooling that one we want to use Ansel is the common substrate if you will automation substrate across this platform. So that's motivating the partners to come to us and say, Hey, I had I was out five Aspire last week, and they're all in a natural. I mean, it's really impressive to see just how much there in unanswerable and how much they're being driven by their customers when they do Ansell workshops without five, they say the attendance is amazing so they're being pulled by their customers and therefore the partners are coming to us. And that's driving our platform kind of usability across the across the scale. >>Another angle we'll see when we talk to the engineers of the partners that are actually doing the work to work with danceable is that they're seeing is ah, change also in how they it's no longer like an individual customer side individual day center because everything is so much more open and so much more visible. You know there's value in there, making it appealing and easy for their customers to gain advantage of what they're doing. And also the fact that the scales across those customers as well because they have their internal team's doing it, saying the same things and so bringing them to an automation capable, like Ansel have to push. That means that they also gained some of the customers appreciation for them, making it easier to do their tasking collaboration with us and you know, the best collaborations. We've got some more partners, all initiated by customers, saying Hey, I want you to go and get danceable content, >>the customer driving a lot of behavior, the guest system. Correct. On the just another point, we've been hearing a lot of security side separate sector, but cyber security. A lot of customers are building teams internally, Dev teams building their own stacks and then telling the suppliers a support my AP eyes. So now you start to see more of a P I integration point. Is that something that is gonna be something that you guys gonna be doubling down on? What's that? What's the approach there? How does that partner connected scale with the customers? So we've >>been eso Ansel security automation, which is the automation connecting I. P. S. C. P. S that kind of stuff. It is almost a replay of what we did the network automation space. So we saw a need in the network automation space. We feel that we became a catalyst in the community with our partners and our customers and our and our contributors. And after about three years now, Ansel Network automation is a huge piece of our business and adoption curve. We're doing the exactly see the exact same thing in the security automation space compliance. The side over here, we're talking about kind of automating the connections between your firewalls, your threat detection systems and all that kind of stuff. So we're working with a set of partners, whether it's Cisco, whether it's Palo Alto, whether it's whether it's resilient by the EMS, resilient and being able to connect and automate the connections between the threat and the response and and all of that kind of >>the same trajectory as the network automation >>Zach. Same trajectory, just runnin the same play and it's working out right now. We're on that kind of early part of that curve, that adoption curve, and we have partners jumping in with us. >>You're talking to customers. We've heard certain stories. You know how I got, you know, 1000 hours of work down to a dozen hours of work there. Is there anything built into the tool today that allows them to kind of generate those those hero stats O. R. Any anything along those lines? >>Talk about analytic committee from yes, >>well, again without any analytic side. I mean, those things starts become possible that one of the things we've been doing is turning on Maur more metrics. And it's actually about mining the data for the customer because Tower gives this great focal point for all the automation that's going on. It's somewhere that everything comes through. So when we export that and then we can we can do that work for all the customers rather than have to duel themselves. Then you start to build those pictures and we start with a few different areas. But as we advance with those and start, see how people use them and start having that conversation customers about what data they want to use and how they want to use it, I think that's gonna be very possible. You know, it's so >>important. E think was laid out here nicely. That automation goes from a tactical solution to more strategic, but more and more how customers can leverage that data and be data driven. That's that's gonna drive them for it. And any good customer examples you have of the outcomes. No, you're talking to a lot of >>PS one from this morning. Yeah, >>so I mean, I'll be Esther up this morning, and I think that the numbers they used in the demo that she's like, you know, last year they did 100,000 from launch to the end of the year. 100,000 changes through their platform on this year so far that in a 1,000,000. So now you know, from my recollection, that's about the same time frame on either side of the year. So that's a pretty impressive acceleration. Side of things. We've had other ones where people have said, You know how many times you were telling some customers yesterday? What used to take eight hours to a D R test with 20 or 30 people in for the weekend now takes 12 minutes for two People on the base is just pushing a few buttons just as they go through and confirm everything worked that that type of you can't get away from that type of change. >>J. P. Morgan example yesterday was pretty compelling. I mean, time savings and people are, I mean, this legit times. I mean, we're talking serious order of magnitude, time savings. So that's awesome. Then I want to ask you guys, Next is we're seeing another pattern in the market where amongst your customer base, where it's the same problem being automated, allover the place so playbooks become kind of key as that starts to happen is that where the insights kind of comes in? Can you help us kind of tie that together? Because if I'm a large enterprise with its I'm decentralized or centralized, are organized problem getting more gear? I'm getting more clouds, game or operations. There's more surface area of stuff and certainly five g I ot is coming around the corner. Mention security. All this is expanding to be much more touchpoints. Automation seems to be the killer app for this automation, those mundane task, but also identifying new things, right? Can you guys comment on that? >>Yeah, so maybe I'll start rich. You could jump in, which is a little bit around, uh, particularly those large accounts where you have these different disparate teams taking a approach to automate something, using Ansel and then be able to repeat or reuse that somewhere else. The organization. So that idea of being for them to be able to curate they're automation content that they've created. Maybe they pulled something down from galaxy. Maybe they've got something from our automation husband. They've made it their own, and now they want to curate that and spread it across the organization to either obviously become more efficient, but also in four standards. That's where automation hub is going to come into play here. Not only will it be a repo for certify content from us and our partners, but it will also be an opportunity for them to curate their own content and share it across the organization. >>Yeah, I think when you tie those two things together and you've got that call discover abilities, I had away go and find what I want. And then the next day, the next day, after you've run the automation, you then got the nerve to say, Well, who's who's using the right corporate approved rolls? Who's using the same set of rolls from the team that builds the standards to make sure you're gonna compliant build again, showing the demo That's just admin has his way of doing it, puts the security baseline application on top and you go, Oh, okay, who's running that security baseline continuously every time. So you can both imposed the the security standards in the way the build works. But you can also validate that everybody is actually doing the security standards. >>You what I find fascinating about what you guys are doing, and I think this is came out clearly yesterday and you guys are talking about it. And some of the community conversations is a social construct here. Going on is that there's a cultural shift where the benefits that you guys are throwing off with the automation is creating a network effect within the companies. So it's not just having a slack channel on texting. The servers are up or down. It's much more of a tighter bond between the stakeholders inside the company's. Because you have people from different geography is you have champions driving change. And there's some solidarity happening between the groups of people, whether they're silo door decentralized. So there's a whole new social network, almost a cultural shift that's happening with the standardization of the substrate. Can you guys comment on this dynamic? Did you see this coming? You planning forward? Are you doubling down on it? >>I think so. And we talk about community right on how important that is. But how did you create that community internally and so ask balls like the catalyst so most teams don't actually need to understand in their current day jobs. Get on all the Dev ops, focus tools or the next generation. Then you bring answer because they want to automate, and suddenly they go. Okay, Now I need to understand source control, and it's honest and version. I need to understand how to get pulls a full request on this and so on and so forth on it changes that provides this off. The catalyst for them to focus on what changed they have to make about how they work, because what they wanted to do was something that requires them to do you no good disciplines and good behaviors that previously there was no motivation or need to do. I think >>Bart for Microsoft hit on that yesterday. You know, if you saw Bart Session but their network engineers having to get familiar with concepts of using automation almost like software development, life cycles right and starting to manage those things in repose. And think of it that way, which is intimidating at first for people who are not used to. But once they're over that kind of humping understand that the answer language itself is simple, and our operations person admin can use it. No problem, >>he said himself. Didn't my network engineers have become network developers. >>It's funny watching and talking to a bunch of customers. They all have their automation journey that they're going through. And I hear the Gamification I'm like, Okay, what if I have certain levels I have to reach in it unlocked capabilities, you know, in the community along the way. Maybe that could build a built in the future. >>Maybe it's swag based, you know, you >>get level C shows that nice work environment when you're not talking about the server's down on some slack channel when you're actually focusing on work. Yeah, so that mean that's the shift. That's what I'm saying, going >>firefighting to being able to >>do for throwing bombs. Yeah, wars. And the guy was going through this >>myself. Now you start a lot of the different team to the deaf teams and the ops teams. And I say it would be nice if these teams don't have to talk to complain about something that hadn't worked. It was Mexican figured it was just like I just like to talk to you because you're my friend. My colleague and I'd like to have a chat because everything's working because it's all automated, so it's consistent. It's repeatable. That's a nice, nice way. It can change the way that people get to interact because it's no longer only phoned me up when something's wrong. I think that absent an interesting dynamic >>on our survey, our customer base in our community before things one of the four things that came up was happier employees. Because if they're getting stuff done and more efficient, they have more time to actually self actualizing their job. That becomes an interesting It's not just a checkbox in some HR manual actually really impact. >>And I kind of think the customers we've heard talk rvs, gentlemen, this morning gave me a lot of the fear initially is, well, I automate myself out of a job, and what we've heard from everybody is that's not absolutely That's not actually true at all. It just allows them to do higher value things that, um or pro >>after that big data, that automation thing. That's ridiculous. >>I didn't use it yesterday. My little Joe Comet with that is when I tried to explain to my father what I do. Andi just said Well, in the 19 seventies, they said that computers you mean we'll do a two day week on? You have computer systems in your blood, and now you're mentoring a lot of companies. Author you a lot of work, and you're lending your voice to some cutting edge issues here in Silicon Valley and around the world. Thanks for joining me today for the conversation. >> Thank you. It's fun to be here, >> So I love the fact that you're here. You're a celebrity in the commute computer industry circles. You were there at the beginning, when the computer systems or the Internet were being connected as they built out of stone of the whole system's revolution in the eighties, and the rest is history. Now we have cloud computing, and now we're seeing a whole nother level step function of scale. And so you've kind of seen it all. You've seen all all the waves. Actually, something like make is they have seen some of the ways, but you've seen all of them. The most compelling thing I think that's happening now is the convergence of social science and computer science. Kind of our motto. Silicon Angle. You recently wrote to Post on Medium that that has been kind of trending and going viral. I want to get your perspective on that. And they're They're interesting because they they bring a little bit of computer science called the authoritative Authority Terrian Technology Reclaiming Control far too attention, part one. We go into great detail to lay out some big picture computer industry discussions. What's it all about? What's what's the What's the idea behind these stories? >> So let me back up a little bit in that, a Sze Yu said. And we can go into this if you want. I was very involved in a lot of thie, ah, innovation that happened in the Village Valley in terms of microprocessors, the Internet, networking, everything that laid the foundation for a lot of the things we see today incredible opportunities for my career for problems we solved over the last ten years. Ten, twelve years. Um, I began to see a shift and a shift in the culture and a shift in the way technology was impacting us. And it's not all good or bad. It's that it felt like we were out of balance and that we were becoming shorter and shorter, term focused and actually my book in two thousand eight closing the innovation gap. The main message there is let's not forget about the seeds you plant that all of this comes from because we're reaping the benefit of those seeds. We're not planning new seats and that we were becoming in the Valley in the nation the way we thought about things more and more short term focused and technology was causing some of that and benefitting and not been and at a disadvantage because of that. So that started with my book in two thousand eight and then in twenty fourteen, I think it was I did a Ted talk a Ted X talk called Balancing our Digital Diets, and I was even Mohr concerned that we were out of whack in terms of the consequences of innovation, and I drew an analogy to our food's systems, where so much innovation and creating cheap calories and energy and things like high fructose corn syrup that it took years to realize that, Oh, there's some negative consequences of that innovation. And so that was kind of a warning that, um, we weren't thinking enough about the consequences of at that point. Social media. That was before fake news, and I talked about tweets and how truth that lies went faster than truth, not knowing how bad that situation was going to be and then leading up to the election and after the election. We all know and have all learned now about the impacts of these technologies on our democracy, and I believe on our society and humanity. And I don't think it's just about our election system. I think it's about our psyches and how the technology's air impacting the way we think our fear and anxiety level of our kids and us is adults. So I been talking to people about it and advising, and I finally decided as, uh, I was collaborating with people that I felt that a lot of the awareness was in pockets that we talked about data privacy or we talked about addiction. But these air things were all interrelated, and so I wanted to one ad. My voices is technologists because I think a lot of the people who are writing the building, the awareness and talking about it if you are in government or a journalist's or even a social scientist people, it's really easy to say, Yeah, you say that, but you don't understand. It's more complicated than that. You don't understand the technology. So one, I do understand that technology. So I felt adding my voice as a technologist. But I'm also, uh, just increasingly concerned about what we do about it and that we take a more holistic view. So that's what, what what the pieces are about. And the reason I broke it into two pieces is because they're too long for most people, even the way they are. But the first is to build awareness of the problems which we can dig into it a high level if you want. And then the second is to throw out ideas as we move towards discussing solutions. So let me take a breath because you were goingto jump in, and then I can. >> No, it's just because you're connecting the foundational of technology foundation technology, identifying impact, looking at pockets of awareness and then looking at how it's all kind of coming together when you talk like that The first time I saw O subsystem interrupt us connection so someone could get like a operating system. And I think the society that you're pointing out in the article, the first one intention was there only to relate. And I think that's the key part. I think that's interesting because we run into people all the time when we do our cue broadcasts that have awareness here and don't know what's going on this. So this context that's highly cohesive. But there's no connection, right? So the decoupled right but highly cohesive, That's kind of systems. Architecture concept. So how do we create a robust technology's society system where technology and I think that's a threat that we're seeing this? What I cleaned out of the articles was your kind of raising the flag a little bit to the notion of big picture right system, kind of a foundational, but let's look at consequences and inter relationships, and how can we kind of orchestrate and figure out solutions? So what was the reaction to expand on that concept? Because this is where I was. It was provocative to me, >> right? So I think there are two thought trains that I just went down. One is that one of the problems we have that has been created by technology and technology is suffering from again. It's causing both cause and effect is not enough seats, system thinking and so one issue, which is not just this is not just about social media and not just about a I, but over the last twenty years we've increasingly trained, I think, are, Ah, engineers and computer scientists in Mohr transactional thinking. And as we move quicker and quicker to solve problems, we are not training our leaders or training our technologist to think in terms of systems. And so what I mean by systems is two things that you can break, that any problems have pieces. But those pieces air inter connected. We are interconnected, and that you, if you don't keep those things in mind, then you will not design things in a way, I believe that have the longevity and make the right type decisions. The second is the law of consequences when you have a system, if you do something here, it's going to impact something here. And so that whole notion of taking was thinking through consequences. I'm afraid that we're training people as we are focusing on being more and more agile, moving more and more quickly that it's in technology and in society that we're losing some of that system, thinking >> that they kind of think that's the trade off is always around. Whenever he had systems conversations in the past, but my old systems had on trade offs, we have overhead, so we have more memory. How do we handle things? So this is kind of That's just what happens. You tell about consequence, but >> we don't have all those we I'm older than you. But we started at a time when that we were limited. We were limited by memory. We were limited by processing. We were limited by band with and a different times. As thie industry emerged, the constraints were in different areas. Today, you don't have any of those constraints. And so, if you don't have any of those constraints. You don't get trained in thinking about trade offs and thinking about consequences. So when when we come into just what drove me to write, this one set of things are foundational issues and what I mean by foundational it's it's our relationship to technology. And the fact of the matter is, as a society, um, we put technology on a pedestal, and we have, uh, this is not to be taken out of Cut is not to be taken the extreme of talking about people, but overall, our relationship with technology is a bullying, controlling relationship. That's why I called it authoritarianism. >> Upgrade your iPhone to the new version. >> Well, whether it's as a user that you're giving up your your your authority to all these notifications and to your addiction, whether it is the fact that it is the control with the data, whether it is predictive ai ai algorithms that are reading your unconscious behaviors and telling you what you think, because if it's suggesting what you by putting things in front of you. So there are all of these behaviors that our relationship with technology is not a balanced relationship and you could one. You have a culture where the companies that are that have that power are driving towards. It's a culture of moving fast growth only don't think about the consequences. It's not just the unintended consequences, but it's the consequences of intended use. So the business models and at which we don't need to go into, because I think a lot of other people talk about that all end up with a situation which is unhealthy for us as people and humanity and for us as a society. So you take that part and it is. There's a parallel here, and we should learn from what happened with industrial Ah, the industrial revolution. We want progress. But if we don't pay attention to the harm, the harmful byproducts and trade offs of progress, it's why we have issues with climate. It's why we have plastic in our oceans. It's because you, you judge everything by progresses just growth and industrialization without thinking about well being or the consequences. Well, I believe we now face a similar challenge of digitization, so it's not industrialization. But it's digitalization that has byproducts in a whole number of areas. And so what the the article does is get into those specifics, whether it's data or anxiety, how we think our cognitive abilities, our ability to solve problems, All of those things are byproducts of progress. And so we should debate um, where we what we're willing to give up one last thing. And then I'll have to come in, which is one of the problems with both of these is is humans value convenience. We get addicted to convenience, and if somebody gives us something that is going to make things more convenient, it sure is held to go backward. And that's one of the reasons the combination of measuring our goodness as a country or a CZ. Globalization by economic growth and measuring our personal wellness by convenience, if something is more convenient, were happier. Take those two together, and it makes a dangerous cop combination because then our need for community convenience gets manipulated for continued economic growth. And it doesn't necessarily end up in, Ah, progress from, ah, well being perspective. >> It's interesting point about the digitization, because the digital industrial revolution, when the digital revolution is happening, has consequences. We're seeing them and you point them out in your post Facebook and fake news. There's also the global landscape is the political overlay. There's societal impact. There's not enough scholars that I've been trained in the art of understanding into relationships of technology, and Peg used to be a nerd thing. And now my kids are growing up. Digital natives. Technology is mainstreams, and there it is. Politics. You know, the first hack collection, Some of the control, The first president actually trolled his way. That president, I said that I'm the kid. That was my position. He actually was a successful troll and got everyone he trolled the media and you got the attention. These air new dynamics, This is reality. So is you look forward and bring these ideas, and I want to get your thoughts on ideas on how to bring people together. You've been on a CTO Cisco Systems. I know you've been sleeping on a board. This is a cross pollination opportunity. Bring people together to think about this. How do you do You look at that? How do you view how to take the next steps as a as an industry, as a society and as a global nations? It eventually, because cyber security privacy is becoming polarized. Also on a geography bases in China they have. GPR is hard core there. In Europe, he got Asia. With Chinese. You got America being American. It's kind of complicated as a system architecture thinking. How do you look at this? What is the playing field where the guard rails? What's your thoughts on this? Because it's a hard one, >> right? So it is a hard one and it isn't. It isn't easy to pave out a path that says it's solvable. Um, nor does Climate right now. But you have to believe we're going to figure it out because we have to figure it out. So I think there are a lot of pieces that we need to start with, and then we need to adjust along the way. And, um, one piece is and let me back up. I am not. I don't believe we can leave this up to the industry to solve the incentives and the value systems and the understanding of the issues. The industry is coming from an industry perspective, and you can't also. You also can't leave it just two technologists because technologists have a technology person perspective. I don't believe that you just can have government solve it for a variety of reasons. One is, if it takes a spectrum of things to legislation, tends to be retroactive, not forward looking. And you need to be really careful not to come up with regulation that actually reinforces the status quo as opposed to making something better. But I think we need to. We do need to figure out how to govern in a way that includes all of these things. So once >> it's running, it's clear that watching the Facebook hearing and watching soon dark sky in front of the house. Our current elected officials actually don't even know how the Internet works, so that's one challenge. So you have a shift in its every beat >> and it and it's actually, if you think about the way legislation often gets made one of the problems with our democracy right now, I'm not going to put it in quotes. But I want to put it >> out. >> Is that the influence of money on our democracy means that so often the input toe legislation comes from industry. So whether it's again big tech, big pharma, big Oil, big. That's the way this cycle works in places where we have had successful legislation that industry input, what you need industry input. You just don't want industry to be the on ly input that is balanced with other input. And so we need infrastructure in the world. In the country that has policy ideas, technology. This needs to come from civil society, from the academy from non profits. So you need the same way we have environmental sciences. We need to fund from government, not just industry funded that science. That's number one. And then we need ways to have conversations about influencing companies to do the right thing. Some of it is going to be through legislation some of it is going to be for through pressure. This, in some ways is like tobacco in some ways, like it's like food. In some ways, it's like climate on DH. It's so and an underlying any of this to happen. We need people to understand and to speak up because awareness amongst whether it's individuals, parents, teachers, we need to give people the information to protect themselves and to push back on companies and to rally pushback on government. Because if if there's not an awareness of people are walking around saying, Don't take away my service, don't make this less convenient don't tax my soda. Don't tell me my text messages. That's right, so and I'm not saying taxes of the way. But if there isn't what what I'm focused on is, how do we build awareness? How do we get information out? How do we get companies like yours and others that this becomes part of >> our >> messaging of understanding so we can be talking about I >> think it's, you know back, Teo, The glory days of the TCP epi Internet revolution. He sent a package from here to there. It's a step. Take a first step. I personally listening to you talk feel and I said, It's on The Cuban people know that. You know, my my rap know that I've been pounding this. There's a counter culture in there somewhere. Counter culture's is where action happens, and I think you know, tax regulation and, you know, the current generations inherited. It is what it is we have. You're laying out essentially the current situation. John Markoff wrote a great book, What the door Mail said, talking about how the sixties counterculture influence the computer industry from breaking in for getting computer time for time sharing, too hippy revolution question I have for you put you on the spot. Is Is there a counterculture in your mind? Coming a digital hippie quotes is because I feel it. I feel that that let the air out of the balloon before it pops. Something has to happen and I think has to be a counterculture. I yet yet can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's a digital kind of a revolution, something compelling that says Whoa time out. >> All right? I think we need a couple of counter culture's in that in layers of it, because, um, I think there is going to be or is starting to be a counterculture amongst technologist and the technology industry and entrepreneurs who are some it's still small who are saying, You know what? This chasing unicorns and fastest growth and scale, you know, move faxed and break things. But, um, we want to move fast, but we want to think about whether we're breaking what we're breaking is really dangerous, you know, move fast and break things is fine, but if it's oops, we broke democracy. That isn't something that, uh that is I'm sorry you have to think about and adapt more quickly. So I think there is Are people who are talking about let's talk openly about the harm. Let's not just be tech optimists. Let's understand that it's small, but it's beginning and you're seeing it in a I for instance, the people who are saying Look, were technologists, we want to be responsible. This is a powerful weapon or tool. And let's make sure we think about how we use it. Let me just say one thing, which is, I think we needed another kind of counterculture, which I'm hoping is happing in a number of areas, which is societally saying, You know, we have a slow food movement. Maybe we just need a slow down, a little bit movement. So if you look at mindfulness, if you look at kids who are starting to say, You know what? I want to talk to someone in person, I don't. So we we need some of that counter movement where I'm hoping the pedestal starts to come back. In terms of people looking for real connectivity and not just numbers of connections, >> it's interesting, You know, everything has a symmetrical, responsible thing about it. For every fake news payload and network effect is potentially an opposite reaction of quality network effect. It's interesting, and I don't know where it is, but I think that's got it could be filled, certainly on the economic side, by new entrepreneurial thinking, like one observation I'm making is you know this. Remember, they'll bad boys of tech and he's smiling. Now It's bad gals, too, which is growing still lower numbers. So I think there's gonna be a shift to the good, the good folks right moment. But she's a she's a good entrepreneur. She's not just out there to make a quick buck or hey, mission driven za signal we're seeing. So you start to see a little bit more of a swing to Whoa, hey, let's recognize that it's not about, you know, could Buck or >> so, yes, but between you and I, it's teeny compared to the other forces. So that's what those of us who believe that needs to happen need to continue to >> one of those forces money making. >> I think it's a combination of, Ah, money and how much money, Dr. Celebrity culture, um, the forces, the power that's in place is so strong that it's hard to break through, um, short term thinking, not even being trained. So like so many things in our culture, where you have entrenched power and then you see uprising and you get hope and that's where you need the hope. But, um, we've seen it so often in so many movements, from race to gender, where you think, Oh, that's solved, it's not solved and then you come back in and come back at it. So I just I would argue that there is little bits of it, but it needs fuel. It needs continuity. It it. And the reason I think we need some government regulation is it needs help because it's not gonna >> happen. You should question, you know, some successes that I point out Amazon Web services, Google even having a long game kind of narrative they're always kind of were misunderstood at first. Remember, Google was loud by search is not doing too well. Then the rest is history. Amazon was laughed. Amazon Web services was laughed at. So people who have the long game seemed to be winning in these transitions. And that's kind of what you're getting at. You think long term, the long game. If you think in terms of the long term vision, you then going look at consequences differently. How many people do you run in? The valleys actually think like that. Okay, >> so we're talking about two different things. One is long term thinking, and I do think that apple, Google, Amazon have taken long term thinking's. So there are a good example. But if you look at them, if we look at the big companies in terms of the way they approached the market and competition and their potential negative impacts on overall society, they're part of the power. They're not doing anything to change the systems, to not >> have good and continue to benefit. The rich get richer. >> So there this This is why it's complicated. There are not good guys and bad guys there are. These people are doing this and that. So do I think overall dough? I see more long term thinking. Um, not really. I think that the incentives in the investment community, the incentives in the stock market. The incentives culturally are still very much around shorter term thinking. Not that there aren't any, but >> yeah, I would agree. I mean, it tends to be, you know, Hey, we're crushing it. We're winning, you know? Look at us. Growth hack. I mean, just the languages. Semantics. You look at that. I think it's changed. I think Facebook is, I think, the poster child of short term thinking growth hacks move fast, break stuff and look where they are, you know, they can't actually sustaining and brand outside of Facebook, they have to buy Instagram and these other companies to actually get the kind of growth. But certainly Facebook is dominate on the financial performance, but they're kind of sitting in their situation. I think you know the bro Grammer movement, I think is kind of moving through the white common ear culture of Okay, let's get some entrepreneurship going. Great. Rod. I think that's stabilising. I think we're seeing with cloud really science and thinking for good. That's a positive sign. >> Well, I'm I'm glad to hear that from you, you know, and all >> you're probably going with. >> No, no, no, I'll take that and take that into feeding my hope because I hope, >> well, the movement is classic. Look, we're not gonna tolerate this anymore. I think transparency in my final question to you before you get to some of the more entrepreneur Question says, If you look at the role of community on data, science and connectedness, one of the things about being connected is you got potential potential for collective intelligence. So if you look at data, as I said, networks, what if there was a way to kind of hone that network to get to the truth fast? Esther, something we've been working on here, and I think that's something that, you know changes media. It changes the game. But collective intelligent, the role of the community now becomes a stakeholder and potentially laying out. So his problems and you're part of the Mayfield community was co created this video with roll community, super important people. The rule of the of the person your thoughts on >> so I community is a word that is has takes on a lot of meetings, and the problem is when you mean it one way and use it the other way, the same as data driven. So I think there's at one level which is community and conductivity that has to do with collecting input from lots of sources. And when you talk about investigative journalism or they're in environmental situations or all sorts of areas where the ability to collect information from lots of sources that air interested and analyze that information that is one level of community and connectivity and networking because of people you know which is great, there's another type. When people talk about community, they mean a sense of community in terms of what humans need and what that connectivity is. And most online networks don't give you that level. The online needs to be augmented by, Ah, inter personal understanding. And one of the problems. I think with today's technology is we're fitting humans into bits that technology Khun Support, as opposed to recognizing what are our human needs that we want to hold on to and saying There are some things that are not going to fit into somebody's data set. So in that first type of community than absolutely, I think there's lots of benefits of the cloud and wisdom of the crowd. But if you're talking about humans connecting in people. You don't have the same type of, uh, that that really community online tools can help. But we should never confuse what happens in our online world >> with your final question for, you know, we got We're pushing the time here. Thank you for spending time. First of all, it's great conversation. You've seen the movie with venture capital from the beginning. You know, all the original players seeing what is now just where's that come from? Where are we? What's the state of VC? Then? He hope to the future, they all adding value. How do you see that evolving and where are we with? >> You know, I would. I think venture capital has gone through a lot of different phases. And like so many things, especially those of us who want computers, we liketo lump them all together. They're not altogether. There are some small, Yes, like they field. And the I do think, though, that something shifted in the lead up to the dot com. Ah, and later the burst. And what shifted is venture capitalists. Before that time were company builders. They were the financiers, but they saw themselves with the entrepreneur building companies because of the expansion leading up to two thousand, and the funds grew and the people coming into the field were, they became more bankers and they took more financial supposed to balancing financing and entrepreneurship. It felt like it moved. Maurin toe. This is a private equity play, Um, and I think the dynamic with entrepreneurs and the methodology overall shifted, and I don't know that that's changed Now again, not across the board. I think there are some, uh, those firms that have identified our partners within firms who still very much want Teo filled companies and partner with entrepreneurs. But I think the dynamic shifted, and if you view them as that's what they are, is private equity investors. And don't expect something else. If people need money, that's a good pick. Ones that are the best partner >> is your partner. If you want a banker, go here. If you want Builder, go their key distinction. Judy. Thanks for sharing that insight. We're Judy Estrin. noise i'm john furrier we're here with IBM to talk about big data big data analytics and we're doing a first-ever crowd chat simulcast of live feed with IBM so guys we're going to try this out it's like go to crouch at dan / Hadoop next and join the conversation and our guests here Rob Thomas vice president product development big data analyst at IBM and beth smith general manager of IBM analytics platform guys welcome to welcome to the cube thank you welcome back and so IBM mostly we're super excited to next week as I was the interconnect you're bigger than you guys mashed up three shows for the mega shows and and Aerosmith's playing so it's going to say I'm from the Boston air so I'm really excited about you know Aerosmith and all the activities of social lounge and and whatnot but we've been following you guys the transformation of IBM is really impressive you guys certainly think a lot of heat in the press in terms of some of the performance size in the business but it's pumping right now you guys seem to have great positioning the stories are hanging together a huge customer base huge services so we're at the Big Data world which is tends to be startup driven from the past few years over the past phase one the big cuppies came in and started saying hey you know there's a big market our customers see demand and that so I got your take on on as we're coming in to interconnect next next week what is the perspective of big data asli Watson has garnered headlines from powering toys to jeopardy to solving huge world problems that's a big data problem you guys are not new to Big Data so when you look at this big data week here and Silicon Valley what's the take sure so I'll start often embedded Bethke night in so our big focus is how we start to bring data to the masses and we start to think in terms of personas data science and plays an increasingly important role around big data how people are accessing that the developer community and then obviously the line of business community which is the client set that I've been serving four years but the announcements that we've made this week around Hadoop are really focused on the first two personas in terms of data scientists how they start to get better value out of Hadoop leveraging different tools we'll talk about what some of those are and so we're really starting to change it about Hadoop results me about insight it's not about infrastructure infrastructure is interesting but it's really about what you're getting out of it so that's why we're approaching it that way it's how well it has naturally the IBM strategy around data cloud and engagement and data is really about using the insights which like Rob said it's about the value can get from the data and how that can be used in to transform professions and industries and I think when we bring it back to Big Data and the topic of a doob I think frankly it has gotten to a point that clients are really beginning to say it's time to scale they're seeing the value in the technology what it can bring how it gives them some diversity in their data and analytics platform and they're ready to announce scale on their workloads as a part of it so the theme is Hadoop next okay so that takes us right to the next point which is okay what's next is a phase one okay we got some base position validation okay this new environments customers don't want that so what so what is next i mean we're earring things like in memories hot aussie spark has proven that there's an action in member that that kind of says okay analytics at the speed of business is something that's important you guys are all over that and we've heard some things from you guys so so what's how do we get to the next part where we take Hadoop as an infrastructure opportunity and put it into practice for solutions at what what are the key things that you guys see happening that must happen for the large customers to be successful so I think that actually ties into the announcements we made this week around the open data platform because that's about getting that core platform to ensure that their standardization around it there's interoperability around it and then that's the base and that vendors and clients are coming together do that and to really enable and facilitate the community to be able to standardize around that then it's about the value on top of that around it etc it's about the workloads and what could be brought to bear to extend up that how do you apply it to real time streaming how do you add things like machine learning how do you deal with things like text analytics I mean we have a we have a client situation where the client took 4 billion tweets and were able to analyze that to identify over a hundred and ten million profiles of individuals and then by integrating and analyzing that data with the internal data sources of about seven or eight different data sources they were able to narrow into 1.7 million profiles that matched at at least ninety percent precision you know now they've got data that they can apply on buying patterns and stuff it's about that it's about going up the stack we're going to talk for hours my mind's exploding privacy creepy I mean a personas is relevant now you talk about personalization I mean collective intelligence has been an AI concepts we try not to be creepy okay cool but now so that brings us to the next level I mean you guys were talk about cognitives on that is a word you guys kick around also systems of engagement systems of records an old term that's been around in the old data warehousing dates fenced-off resources of disk and data but now with systems of engagement real-time in the moment immersive experience which is essentially the social and/or kind of mobile experience what does that mean how do you guys get there how do you make it so it's better for the users more secure or I mean these are hot button issues that kind of lead us right to that point so I'll take you to that a couple ways so so first of all your first question round head tube next so Hadoop was no longer just an IT discussion that's what I've seen changed dramatically in the last six months I was with the CEO of one of the world's largest banks just three days ago and the CEO is asking about Hadoop so there's a great interest in this topic and so so why so why would a CEO even care I think one is people are starting to understand the use cases of the place so that talks about entity extraction so how you start to look at customer records that you have internally in your systems are record to your point John and then you you know how do you match that against what's happening in the social world which is more or the engagement piece so there's a clear use case around that that changes how clients you know work with their with their customers so so that's one reason second is huge momentum in this idea of a logical data warehouse we no longer think of the data infrastructure as oh it's a warehouse or it's a database physically tied to something not tied to just what relational store so you can have a warehouse but you can scale in Hadoop you can provision data back and forth you can write queries from either side that's what we're doing is we're enabling clients to modernize their infrastructure with this type of a logit logical data warehouse approach when you take those kinds of use cases and then you put the data science tools on top of it suddenly our customers can develop a different relationship with their customers and they can really start to change the way that they're doing business Beth I want to get your comments we have the Crouch at crowd chat / a dupe next some commentary coming in ousley transforming industries billion tweets killer for customer experience so customer experience and then also the link about the data science into high gear so let's bring that now into the data science so the logical you know stores okay Nick sands with virtualization things are moving around you have some sort of cognitive engines out there that can overlay on top of that customer experience and data science how are they inter playing because this came out on some of the retail event at New York City that happened last week good point of purchase personalization customer experience hated science it's all rolling together and what does that mean unpack that for us and simplify it if you can oh wows complexing is a big topic you know it's a big topic so a couple of different points so first of all I think it is about enabling the data scientists to be able to do what they their specialty is and the technologies have advanced to allow them to do that and then it's about them having the the data and the different forms of data and the analytics at their fingertips to be able to apply that I the other point in it though is that the lines are blurring between the person that is the data scientist and the business user that needs to worry about how do they attract new customers or how do they you know create new business models and what do they use as a part of do you think we're also seeing that line blurring one of the things that we're trying to do is is help the industry around growing skills so we actually have big data University we have what two hundred and thirty thousand participants and this online free education and we're expanding that topic now to again go up the stack to go into the things that data scientists want to deal with like machine learning to go into things that the business user really wants to now be able to capture it's a part of it trying to ask you guys kind of more could be a product question and/or kind of a market question at IBM's Ted at IBM event in he talked about a big medical example in one of her favorite use cases but she made a comment in their active data active date is not a new term for the data geeks out there but we look at data science lag is really important Realty near real time is not going to make it for airplanes and people crossing the street with mobile devices so real real time means like that second latency is really important speed so active date is a big part of that so can you guys talk about passive active data and how that relates to computing and because it's all kind of coming to get it's not an obvious thing but she highlighted that in her presentation because I see with medical medical care is obviously urgent you know in the moment kind of thing so if you would what does that all mean I mean is that something custom Street paying attention to is it viable is it doable so certainly a viable I mean it's a huge opportunity and i'd say probably most famous story we have around that is the work that we did at the university of toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children where we were using real-time streaming algorithms and a real-time streaming engine to monitor instance in the neonatal care facility and this was a million data points coming off of a human body monitoring in real time and so why is that relevant I mean it's pretty pretty basic actually if you extract the data you eat yell it somewhere you load in a warehouse then you start to say well what's going on it's way too late you know we're talking about you know at the moment you need to know what's happening and so it started as a lot was in the medical field would you notice there's some examples that you mentioned but real time is now going well beyond the medical field you know places from retail at the point of sale and how things are happening to even things like farming so real time is here to stay we don't really view that as different from what I would describe as Hadoop next because streaming to me as part of what we're doing with a dupe and with spark which we'll talk about in a bit so it's certainly it is it is the new paradigm for many clients but it's going to be much more common actually if i can add there's a client North Carolina State University it's where I went to school so it's a if it's a client that I talk about a lot but they in addition to what they do with their students they also work with a lot of businesses own different opportunities that may that they may have and they have a big data and analytics sort of extended education business education project as a part of that they are now prepared to be able to analyze one petabyte in near real time so the examples that you and Rob talked about of the real world workloads that are going to exist where real time matters are there there's no doubt about it they're not going away and the technology is prepared to be able to handle the massive amount of data and analytics that needs to happen right there in real time you know that's a great exact point I mean these flagship examples are kind of like lighthouses for people to look at and kind of the ships that kind of come into the harbor if you will for other customers as you always have the early adopters can you guys talk about where the mainstream market is right now I'll see from a services standpoint you guys have great presence and a lot of accounts where are these ships coming into which Harper where the lighthouse is actually medical you mentioned some of those examples are bringing in the main customers is it the new apps that are driving it what innovations and what are the forces and what are the customers doing in the main stream right now where are they in the evolution of moving to these kind of higher-end examples so I mean so Hadoop I'd say this is the year Hadoop where clients have become serious about Hadoop like I said it's now become a board-level topic so it's it's at the forefront right now I see clients being very aggressive about trying out new use cases everybody really across every interest industry is looking for one thing which is growth and the way that you get growth if you're a bank is you're not really going to change your asset structure what you're going to change is how you engage with clients and how you personalized offers if your retailer you're not going to grow by simply adding more stores it might be a short term growth impact but you're going to change how you're engaging with clients and so these use cases are very real and they're happening now Hadoop is a bore group discussion or big day I just didn't see you formula we should have more Hadoop or is it you know I see I've seen it over and over again I'll tell you where you see a lot from his companies that are private equity-owned the private equity guys have figured out that there's savings and there's innovation here every company i worked with that has private equity ownership Hadoop is a boardroom discussion and the idea is how do we modernize the infrastructure because it's it's because of other forces though it's because of mobile it's because of cloud that comes to the forefront so absolutely so let's take Hadoop so I do bits great bad just great a lot of innovations going on there boardroom in these private equity because one they're cutting edge probably they're like an investment they want to see I realized pretty quickly now speed is critical right I would infer that was coming from the private equity side speed is critical right so speed to value what does that mean for ibn and your customers how do you guys deliver the speed to value is that's one of the things that comes out on all the premises of all the conversations is hey you can do things faster now so value on the business side what do you guys see that sure so a a lot of different ways to approach that so we believe that as I said when I said before it's not just about the infrastructure it's about the insight we've built a lot of analytic capabilities into what we're doing around a dupe and spark so that clients can get the answers faster so one thing that we're going to be we have a session here at strata this week talking about our new innovation big R which is our our algorithms which are the only our algorithms that you can run natively on Hadoop where your statistical programmers can suddenly start to you know analyze data and you know drive that to decision make it as an example so we believe that by providing the analytics on top of the infrastructure you can you can change how clients are getting value out of that so how do we do it quickly we've got IBM SoftLayer so we've got our Hadoop infrastructure up on the cloud so anybody can go provision something and get started and ours which is not something that was the case even a couple years ago and so speed is important but the tools and how you get the insight is equally important how about speed 22 value from a customer deployment standpoint is it the apps or is it innovating on existing what do you sing well I think it's both actually um and and so you talked earlier about system of engagement vs system of record you know and I think at the end of the day for clients is really about systems of insight which is some combination of that right we tend to thank the systems of engagement or the newer things and the newer applications and we tend to thank the systems of record are the older ones but I think it's a combination of it and we see it show up in different ways so I'll take an example of telco and we have a solution on the now factory and this is now about applying analytics in real time about the network and the dynamics so that for example the operator has a better view of what's happening for their customers they're in users and they can tell that an application has gone down and that customers have now switched all of a sudden using a competitive application on their mobile devices you know that's different and that is that new applications or old or is it the combination and I think at the end of the day it really comes to a combination I love these systems of insight i'm just going to write that down here inside the inside the crowd chat so i got to talk about the the holy grail for big data analytics and big data from your perspective ideas perspective and to where you guys are partnering I'll see here there's a show of rich targets of a queue hires acquisitions partnerships I mean it's really a frill ground certainly Silicon Valley and and in the growth of a big data cloud mobile and social kind of these infrared photography biz is a message we've heard so what is the holy grail and then what are you guys looking for in partnerships and within the community of startups and or other alliances sure you want to start with the Holy Grail me yeah so so you know I think at the end of the day it is about using technology for business value and business outcome I you know I really think that's what said the spirit of it and so if I tell you why we have for example increased our attention and investment around this topic it's because of that it's because of what Rob said earlier when he said the state that clients are now in um so that's what I think is really important there and I think it's only going to be successful if it's done based own standards and something that is in support of you know heterogeneous environments I mean that's the world of technology that we live in and that's a critical element of it which leads to why we are a part of the Open Data Platform initiative so on the on the the piece of analytics I was just cus our comment about our for example I was just mentioning the crowd chat I had Microsoft just revolution analytics which is not our which is different community is there a land-grab going on between the big guys of you know IBM's a big company what do you guys see in that kind of area terms acquisition targets yeah man I think the numbers would say there's not a land-grab I don't think the MMA numbers have changed at a macro level at all in the last couple years I mean we're very opportunistic in our strategy right we look for things that augment what we do I think you know it's related to partner on your comment your question on partnering but we do acquisitions is not only about what that company does but it's about how does it fit within what IBM already does because we're trying to you know we're going after a rising tide in terms of how we deliver what clients need I think some companies make that mistake they think that if they have a great product that's relevant to us maybe maybe not but it's about how it fits in what we're doing and that's how we look at all of our partnerships really and you know we partner with global systems integrators even though we have one with an IBM we partner with ISVs application developers the big push this week as I described before is around data scientists so we're rolling out data science education on Big Data university because we think that data scientists will quickly find that the best place to do that is on an IBM platform because it's the best tools and if they can provide better insight to their companies or to their clients they're going to be better off so I was so yes that was the commenting on and certainly the end of last week and earlier this week about that Twitter and it's a lot of common in Twitter's figured out and people are confused by Twitter versus facebook and I know IBM has a relation but we're so just that's why pops in my head and I was are saying HP Buddha's got a great value and so I was on the side of Twitter's a winner i love twitter i love the company misunderstood certainly i think in this market where there's waves coming in more and more there's a lot of misunderstanding and i think i want to get your perspective you can share with the folks out there what is that next way because it's confusing out there you guys are insiders IBM i would say like twitter is winning doing very well certainly we're close to you guys we are we're deeply reporting on IBM so we can see the momentum and the positioning it's all in line what we see is that is where the outcomes will end up being for customers but there's still a lot of naysayers out there certainly you guys had your share as as to where's as an example so what is the big misunderstanding that you think is out there around the market we're in and what's the next wave as always waves coming in if you're not out in front that next wave usually driftwood as the old expression goes so what is that big misunderstanding and this kind of converged from a hyper targeted with analytics this is all new stuff huge opportunities huge shifts and inflection point as Bob picciano said on the cube is its kind of both going on the same time shift and it point so what's misunderstood and what's that next big waves so let me start with the next big way is that I'll back into the misunderstanding so the next big wave to me is machine learning and how do you start to take the data assets that you have and through machine learning and the application of those type of algorithms you start to generate better insights or outcomes and the reason i think is the next big wave is it's it may be one of the last competitive motes out there if you think about it if you have a a corpus of data that's unique to you and you can practice machine learning on that and have that you know either data that you can sell or to feed into your core business that's something that nobody else can replicate so it becomes incredibly powerful so one example I'll share with you and I want to bring you my book but it's actually not getting published next week since so maybe next week but so Wiley's publishing a book I wrote and one of the examples I give is a company by the name of co-star which I think very few people have heard of co-star is in the commercial real estate business they weren't even around a decade ago they have skyrocketed you know from zero to five hundred million dollars in revenue and it's because they have data on four million commercial properties out there who else has that absolutely nobody has that kind of reach and so they've got a unique data asset they can apply things like machine learning and statistics to that and therefore anybody who wants to do anything commercial real estate has to start with them so I pointed you're starting to get the point where you have some businesses where data is the product it's not an enabler it's the actual product I think that's probably one of the big misunderstandings out there is that you know data is just something that serves our existing products or existing services we're moving to a world where data is the product and that's the moat I wrote a post in 2008 called data is the new development kit and what you're basically saying is that's the competitive advantage a business user can make any innovation observation about data and not be a scientist and change the game that's what you were saying earlier similar right that's right okay so next big wave misunderstanding what do you wait bet what's your take on what are people not getting what is Wall Street what is potential the VCG really on the front end of some of the innovation but what is the general public not getting I mean we are in shift and an inflection what's it what's the big shift and misunderstanding going on so so I I would tend to you know actually agree with with Rob that I think folks aren't yet really appreciating and I guess I would twist it a little bit and say the insight instead of just the data but but they're not realizing what that is and what it's going to give us the opportunity for you know I would retire early if I actually could predict everything that was going to happen but but you know yeah but if you think about it you know if you think about you know mid to late 90s and what we would have all fault that the internet was going to allow us to do compared to what it actually allowed us to do is probably like night and day and I think the the time we're in now when you take data and you take mobility and you take cloud and you take these systems of engagement and the fact the way people individuals actually want to do things is is similar but almost like on steroids to what we were dealing with in the mid-90s or so and so you know the possibilities are frankly endless and and I think that's part of what people aren't necessarily realizing is that they have to think about that insight that data that actually has some value to it in very different ways there's a lot of disruptive enablers out Dunham's there's a lot to look at but finding which ones will be the biggest right it's hard I mean you get paid a lot of money to do that is if you can figure it out and keep it a secret um but you didn't you machine learning is now out there you just shared with us out competitive advantage so everyone knows know everyone kind of new kind of in the inside but but not everybody's using it right i mean i think another example a company like into it has done a great job of they started off as a software company they've become a data company i think what you what i've observed in all these companies is you can build a business model that's effectively recession proof because data becomes the IP in the organization and so I don't I actually you know I think for us those are the live in the world we this is well understood I don't think it's that well understood yet yeah insiders mic right and you know when we first started doing big data research and working with thousands of clients around the world there were there were six basic use cases it started of course with the customer the the end customer and the customer 360 and that sort of thing and went through a number of different things around optimization etc but the additional one is about those new business models and you know that is clearly in the last 12 to 18 months has become a lot more of what the topic is when I'm talking to clients and I think we will see that expand even more as we go in the future we've a lot of activity on the crowd chatter crowd chatter net / Hadoop necks and I'll mentioned we can probably extend time on that if you guys want to keep it keep it going conversation is awesome and we did getting the hook here so we'll remove the conversation to crouch at totnes Esther Dube next great thought leadership and I can go on this stuff for an hour you guys are awesome great to have you on the cube and so much to talk about a lot of ground will certainly see it in to connect go final question for you guys is what do you guys see for this week real quick summarize what do you expect to see it unfold for a big data week here at Silicon Valley Big Data asked me so I think you know a lot of the what we talked about machine learning is going to be a big topic I think there'll be a lot of discussion around the open data platform that Beth mentioned before it's a big move that we made along with another group supporting the apache software foundation I think that that's a big thing for this week but it should be exciting alright guys thanks for coming out to be IBM here inside the cube we're live in
