Great >>pleasure to be here. Thanks very much. >>Filing. You're welcome. So business value engineering is a concept that you're a fan of on one that you've sort of promoted and evolved. What is business value? Engineering. >>So business value engineering is quite a common term in the industry, but here I affects it's a little different. Fundamentally, it's, ah, collaborative process that we use working with our customers on our partners to make sure that what we do with those customers delivers financial value to their business. So it's fundamentally about making sure what we deliver delivers value. >>So I wanna ask you a question about this because your philosophy is a company seems to be the Let the customer define value. Um, it's in their terms, not your terms, not trying to impose a value equation on them. At the same time, it's nice to be able to compare across companies or industries and firm level on DSO forth. So how do you reconcile that? Is it like balanced Scorecard is sort of pay you can tailor to yourself versus some kind of rigid methodology. How do you How do those two worlds meet in >>TV? Yes, so obviously, benchmarking across industry is really important. And there are lots of people that do that kind of work, and that's part of business value engineering. Fundamentally, it's about mutual collaboration. So it's not just about using the customers framework or that all their language is about agreeing the language. One of the challenges when you're trying to build a business relationship with with one or more parties is you have to have a common shared understanding, a common vision on a common value system so that when I say something to you, it means the same thing when you say it to me. And so part of that collaborative process requires that you worked together on business value, engineering facilitates that it's not just about producing a business case. It's really more about the process and steps that you go through to get to that business case that allows you to establish trust and understanding and clarity. >>How does this enter into the customer discussion? >>And so it enters as early as you can possibly make it. Answer rights? A. Right at the beginning, you asked the very first question, which is fundamentally, what are the business initiatives that you're trying to achieve with this potential change program? And then you have a deep discussion about what they mean. So you understand and they understand, and everybody really agrees firmly what we're trying to achieve before you get anywhere near solution. And it's really difficult as technical people. I've got a technical background to stop yourself from hearing a problem and going. I've got a solution for that on it puts that a more disciplined approach to make sure that you don't straight away go to solution to help. You really understand where you're going, how you're gonna get there and therefore what the financial benefits and metrics would be to do it. Who >>were >>the ideal stakeholders when you're doing a collaboration like this in terms of getting them involved in getting their >>implements. So you might expect the answer to be C level executives on Dove course. They're important from, ah, leadership in a direction perspective. But as it turns out from a human psychological behavior perspective, there are three personality types that are really, really suitable for this kind of engagement work that's focused around change. And if you find those three personality types and quite well understood types of people, they're the ones that tend to cause change. To happen more successfully doesn't mean there any more valuable than anybody else inside an organization, but the other right kinds of people to establish this sort of work with, and it's important you have the right number of those people in a change program. >>So change agents. So I would think like a PL manager here. She's controlling a big portion of the budget. Has thousands of people working for them would be important. Maybe not a sea level executive, but a line of business executive, the son of the field General. Could that be an example of a change agent? Not necessarily because they're trying to protect their turf, >>so not necessarily right When it comes to change, change is always hard in any company you've ever been in in all of our careers. Change is difficult, right? >>Wake up in the morning. >>Let's change. It s it's more about who were the people that lay the groundwork for that change that you follow. You listen to the influences. Now, of course, you'll have people that own the budget the financial controllers on Absolutely. They're important. Of course they are. But they may not be the personality type that causes change to happen. Business value engineering is about making sure you harness the right talent, the right skills, the right people at the right time. Thio help organizations realize the benefit off change. >>If you'll excuse me, this is not seem like a typical role for a software company to take on. Yeah, change management. What? How do you Why do you put yourself in that role? >>I think this is something that all software companies are gonna have to do. And you will see the subject of business value engineering in many software vendors. Now it's true. It's a fine line between being a business analyst and being a software vendor. they were a software provider. I think software providers that don't deliver the context on the value that they are trying to achieve with software they buy in the customers are poorer supplies because they're just trying to push technology on its fun. Technologists like myself enjoy the technology, and I'd buy technology all day long. But is it really the right thing to do? So I think it's about being morally right. You have to take the high ground and conduct that engagement in a way which in some cases, and this has certainly been true in my career, you do the business value work and you realize that you probably shouldn't do the project on. You have to have that that fortitude to say to the customer. This is actually not a great idea because the financial case doesn't support this. I think it is. Taking that moral high ground is a really important stance and software companies that do that generally those customers will come back to you in a future dark time when they've got a different problem. That perhaps does fit you. So I think it's about recognizing there's a both a short medium and a long term engagement with with with the customers that you have to maintain that >>in 2019. Given all the discussion on data digital transformation A. I cloud, I would think that data plays a crucial role in these discussions. So what role does data played? Companies understand the importance of data as it relates to the business value discussion. >>Absolutely. I think I think that data driven decision making is is pretty fundamental. A lot of people say the numbers don't lie. Maybe some statistics might be bent, but numbers don't really like, so you've got to be a capture numbers and make decisions based on those numbers. Eso One of the difficulties, though, is that for many, many years in many industries, we've been using very simple terminology and simple mathematical calculations to do these value calculations. Everybody's aware of Years ago, the software industry was awash with phrases like return on investment calculators, >>R o i N P V I R R. Even >>some of those numbers of valid right for >>a business case for sure, >>for sure, but just sticking with simple things like are always is not enough >>salad. If you treat the software as an asset. A zey expense? Essentially, >>Yeah, yeah, absolutely. But then it comes to the engagement's more than your software I like. I like Thio, I think, as a human being, the software is considerably less than half the game in any change program where you're trying to achieve value and the people they're human beings they're going to do with work are the ones that are going to generate the value. The software's a tool, and the years are very important tool. But it's a tool. So you have to think about how do you build teams that can collaborate around value, achieve the value, measure the value, capture that data but at the same time physically collaborate properly to do the work? >>So how have you apply this methodology for your customers? >>So we've done a number of things, so we've established practice inside. If s, we've made sure that every country has the capability to do business value engineering. We've hired some specialists, people who do this for a living. Andi, we are working with lots and lots of customers now on this as a Maur methodical disciplines approach. But we've also recognized that we needed to measure our existing customers benefits. So what you are existing customer base achieved with our software. So we commissioned Ah, pretty big and important study. And that was anonymous. We weren't involved other than inviting the company to go and do this work on, then unleashing them on our customer base for six months across all industries, all products on asking them to go and find out and measure what our customers really achieve with the software. >>So how was that anonymous? How it was in that you weren't doing the survey. >>We weren't doing the survey and any, um, numbers that came back. Where were anonymous? Dhe. So we couldn't say. Oh, it was this company that gave this feedback with these numbers. So it gave them a sense of freedom to be other express and share that data. >>And so you were specifically asking about the business impact of of I f s software throughout some kind of life cycle, like a before and an after? Yes, Exactly. Isn't it to be or what happened? Okay, so what'd you find >>so as a couple of surprises in the results, actually eso firstly >>tell us who did the study or is that >>yes, So the study. That's a good question, because the the choices are many. There are lots of analyst firms out there that you could use A ll do this sort of work and do it very well. The team that I worked with, we would personally had a previous relationship with I. D. C. Now we really liked I. D. C. And I've done some of this work previously with I D. C. Because they arm or they're an analyst. That has more statisticians as well as analysts. So they take a really very methodical mathematical approach. A scientist. I very much appreciated that. So we we picked them to do this work, and they take it really very, very seriously. And there were a lot of strict processes they have for how we are allowed to engage with them and talk to them during this process. On that rigor, I think, allows us to be comfortable with the numbers and for our customers to be comfortable with the numbers that they obtain because of this anonymity and the rigor they put behind. That's why we picked I. D. C. That work in terms of what we found out where they found on we now just see the report on our customers can go and see this report. We published it last week. So you're just gonna free download and look at the material from I. D. C. The first thing that was interesting about the study. It was human productivity focused. So not things like, how much inventory you hold in supply chain on. Was it reduced? It was more about how did the workers get on? What kind of mistakes did I made? L. A. Faster doing their work and more successful. And they looked at lots of different categories on the returns. The improvements ranged from just a 10% improvement. So not not a huge improvement all the way up to a 94% improvement in productivity. Human productivity. If you averaged it all out, it worked out just shy of of 19% 18 and a bit percent productivity improvement across all of the different teams from the finance function, the supply chain function, human resource functions, sales team, productivity function. So we saw a range. What was good was it pretty much didn't matter. Which category of customer or size of customer or industry. They all saw pretty similar productivity improvements, which means we can extrapolate the numbers. The second thing we saw, which was a surprise, a very pleasant surprise was that usually when you see these kinds of benefits studies, most of the value is in cost. Saving on only cost saving tends to be where asset management resource planning service management happens. Just under half of the value that the I. D. C study showed was net new revenue. The customers were finding that nearly half of the benefit was new money coming to the company. Top Line benefit. That's a little unusual. >>So let me pick. Probe Adept so productivity When I when you're saying productivity, I think revenue per employee has a simple list measure of productivity. But then you're saying there was incremental revenue, a swell independent. It first of all is is revenue per employee the right measure? Or was it more like Do we think's faster or sort of more generic measurements and specific to a task? Or was it kind of boil down to a revenue per employee? And and then how did that relate to the the incremental revenue. >>Yeah, so it was done by function by by team type. So if you look to finance and auditing and human resources and supply chain and so on so that the metrics on the you'll see in the white paper are specific to the team's specifically that role specific to that, >>right, You're not really big in insurance, but a claims adjuster could, you know, get more claims done exactly, or something like >>exactly example. So you'd find, for example, one of the statistics was around filled service engineering on how many jobs per day they couldn't do. It was reasonably specific, >>and they would attribute that directly to your software Direct. Now, as a result of installing I f s, how much would you increase your etcetera per day? >>That's why it took them six months to do the study. I mean, this is quite an in depth piece on >>how many customers that the interview. >>And so it was a cross on dhe. We gave them a challenge to do this. So it was a set of about 17 fairly large customers, which sounds like a small time. >>No, no, no, >>no. But when you do these kinds of studies, >>that's a totally legitimate number. And then thes air in depth surveys. Yeah, so it's not like it's not trivial. And and as well, revenue increases specific, too. The software. So that would have been what, like cohorts sales or service, you know, follow on sales things of that nature. >>Absolutely. And that's why we were so delighted with the report when it came back, because it was it was a really nice pleasant finding. So most companies that all the companies reported the revenue increase, but some are bigger than others. On average, it was a pretty sizable chunk, nearly half of all of the benefit. Um, and when we asked, I D C well, can you give us some kind of glimpse as to why we see such a large chunk of improved revenue? I. D. C. Said, Well, you're improving the productivity of the sales teams so they can quote faster. There's more accuracy and those quotes. The service quality is improved the speed and to get a product to market is faster, so their ability to respond to bids and tenders is better. So is actually a combination of lots of things speed error quality improvements that led to their ability to bid and win faster and better business net revenue. >>Did you attempt Thio factor in less tangible factors, such as customer satisfaction, that promoter score perceived value, customer perceived value. >>So the folk note that the focus of the study was human productivity on. And it's something that I d. C do particularly well on that that's what we gave them a target. Obviously, when we doing business value engineering, you then have to take way more than just that. Things like the benchmark dated find from a study like I. D. C. Have conducted where you take into account those soft factors on other factors outside of human productivity. So value engineering is way more than just human productivity, which is why it's an engagement model. It's something you have to do mutually together. That kind of transparency, really, is what most customers are now demanding. You know, I'm not buying technology unless I know what business outcome I'm going to obtain from this. It's just the way of the world these days. >>It could take away that so it's not just your software's not just operational impact in nature. It's more strategic. It has productivity impact, revenue impacts and obviously cost savings as well. Congratulations. That's good. How did we get this study >>out of people? You said customers can download it. Can anybody down? >>Anybody can download this U S So we've published it on our website. It's very easy to find on it. Sze freely available. We obviously have to comply with the I. D. C's. They owned the rights for the report because it was their material, but we've oversee purchased the rights to the other, distribute that material. We think it's super valuable for our customers. >>What a business model >>and super well, you know, And and if I was to write business case for it, I'd be delighted with the work that was done and I'd be happy with the outcome on. I'm sure our customers will make use of the information to be a benchmark, their own work and also hold my effects on our partners to account to help build business cases. >>Well, I you know, I know it's anonymous ized anonymous to protect the customer, but I bet you some of the customers would be willing to go public with some of this information. You can hear all this noise behind us. We heard this morning in the key note that the definite community is now well over half a million strong. You mentioned before we went line. This is your second definite creates before we get into our city and Cisco. Tell me a little bit about your involvement in the definite community. >> Uh, so I got >> started just looking for support, and it's not like it's a supported product. This is a new venture for everybody. So you go out and you find these little avenues to get questions answered. And WebEx teams has a great community support and just ask a question ended up answering more questions than I was asking, and, you know, that kind of like got me started down this path of, you know, people bounce ideas off each other So really, this is Ah, homecoming. And it's just people inspiring each other If you really want to learn And deep dive Obviously I'm a self learner, so I'll just sit down and really get into it. But I come here to get inspired and the Kino just >> Will you wait? Yeah. What was the key? What was the highlight for you on the Kino? What was >> anything Ashutosh has to talk about? Ashutosh is on the I guess, the incubator side. He comes up with these things, and his job is to get people excited about the FBI's. So today he had an augmented reality app with his phone and he would go around and show network coverage of a WiFi hot spot. You can go up to an access point and troubleshoot network of problems by seeing if on access, points registered or not. So my mind, I'm thinking how many times I go in the data center and look, I have to plug in a laptop to look to see what the lands on a port. Now, Aiken take that same approach too, you know, put my phone out in a data center, and okay, this witch has ah, this V lands here. I could plug it. Antonito even need to plug my laptop. >> I mean, he first introduced the beginning of that demo at Cisco Live in Barcelona. Totally blown away. He's a demo. God first. Yeah, he's amazing. But it shows the automation right and also shows the new kind of experiences. I think to me what is inspiring to me about this community. I'd love to get your reaction. This is that It kind of shows a new way to do work. And it's all about making life easier, But it's also more capability. You can see all the configurations and then ultimately writing new apse. That seems to be the theme. Create definite curiosity with all these capabilities. Is that kind of something that you're seeing as well? What's your reaction to that? That kind of this new way of doing things. >> Wow. I mean, it's we have a code competition are Presidio called Shark Tank, and it's really just to inspire people. Uh, tell me a business use case for this Use cases really ninety percent of it. You confined help you confined mentors your work. But, uh, really Just finding a use case and stuff like this coming here just thinking about new ways to do things and do things to create >> in collaboration What? Some of the things that you see that are low hanging fruit use cases of either mundane tasks or stuff that just needs to be kind of like, abstracted away. What are some of the things >> I have a ton of those s o. Somebody came to me, a law firm that had these attorney's secretary assignments, and they wanted Secretary is to be able to schedule meetings for attorneys. You could do that in a gooey, but we're seeing more and more is away from the buoy. And it's becoming this FBI first. So anything that's not in the gooey, it's in the AP, I So that's where our values integrators has really become. This gap between the jury and the FBI. So what we did, or what I did is going active directory, have some fields filled out because they're already populated. One thing for this I read from that, and then I goto WebEx a p I and I populated, and that runs a nightly basis. >> You automate thataway. Yeah, piece of cake. But this is the trend. This is kind of what we're seeing happening with Cloud the question that comes up in the enterprises. Look, att. Hey, you know, we've been doing this thing for long times the way we do it. We, You know, ten years ago we built out this system. Don't touch it. But I love the new stuff. How do I get the new stuff in? How do I deal the old stuff, The legacy. And we got containers. Got some news stuff. A p. I's a big part of this integration fabric composing APS. I think you have to show >> that the business value it's it's saving time. It's saving people ours, and it's really checking code into get is something you wouldn't think about. Checking network config. Thing to get is something you wouldn't really think about, Uh, just a year ago. But that's really becoming the trend and having a testable code and, uh, you know, kind of Ah, if something goes wrong, I have a backup. You have somebody you know exactly who did what before it was just people hacking away. >> So let's talk about unlocking value for a second. When you were talking with John about what some of the things that blew your mind during this morning's keynote one I was hearing from you and one senses how how much easier certain functions of yourjob are going to be because of this? What value are you seeing that even just a few things that we were announced this morning is going to bring, too? Not just you and your business, but for city and Cisco's customers? >> Well, I mean So, for instance, the Iraqi thing, uh, they released bulk actions. So AP eyes. Typically, if you write the code one of the time, that's goingto limit your ability to do certain functions. Having all these AP eyes in one and point immediately, I'm thinking cloud formation templates. Name is on but ism Iraqi solution, so you could take this entire network and copy and paste. It is one slice of code. That's tremendous. >> What's the community vibe here? Definite. I mean big invention. >> It's a homecoming. I know all these people have met so many people from other areas and people competitors. We're all friends here, you know, And it's not a marketing ventured all you don't see a lot of people you know, scanning badges and bugging you on email later. This is all about just people hurting out about What they've done >> is we're getting >> the show until >> I like >> that. It's not just the hacker fond, you know, Hey, revenue event. They throw a hackathon over it and it turns out the most these events trees, a marketing event. It's completely eyes that >> unorganized as I would want it to be. There's conversations just passing by in the hallway, and I get just as much out of that as I do in a workshop. >> So you're giving a breakout session later today. Contact center. A eye for more efficient governments. >> Yes, that's a twenty minute lightning talk on just a recent project I did and taking an arm from a solution and be able to do Mohr by moving it up to the cloud. This's Amazon connect could be another one, but just basically enabling through the cloud different functionalities we're using Alexe pot, reason, elastic search, reason Landa and we're we're taking the top ten tickets this help desk would receive and trying to automate this. So I need to reset my pen. I need to transfer me to this person that was an operator before in an Excel spreadsheet. So what we did was completely not change your workflow. They're going to upload it, excels for a cheat and has three. It's going to take a Landau function to separate that spread she into a dynamo database Elastic search, going to read that database. And then Lex Boss is goingto interact with elastic search >> and his all in real time. >> It's all in real time. >> And they thought, this all natural language talking together you're working together, >> working together >> to solve those customer problems or get well that And I guess, get the customer that the ticket routed appropriately. >> Yeah, so there's take a look ups to get creation to get clothes and anything that you would typically anything that you can automate. We've done it within the ivy are and we've measured containment rates. So >> yeah, this is exactly why we've been covering. This is our third year, but here in the beginning, at the creation of the event, because what you just described is so valuable and so kind of basic. If you think about it, the number one tickets that everyone that stack ranked haven't over and over again. But breaking towns this going database for this? I got a database for this. I got a database for this. The old world. You have a waterfall process, you have a product. Project manager. People would go in a round trip meeting after meeting, arguing aboutthe ski mus and databases. And I mean, what would it be like in the old days, if you like, went through the traditional models versus his agile? Hey, let's just put it together. Hackett string up. So maybe eyes sling the FBI's rolling up, wiring up >> siding. Me, you're moving from a static ivy are too self service. And then even more what I think you forget who coined the term. But selfie service. You know more about a user you're able to predictably say, I see you have a ticket open or go a step further and say, I see have email on this phone and we're having active sync issues and only alert those people of issues and not bother everybody else. I see you work out of this office and you're calling in. Are you calling about, uh, you know, your office closure? Because we have a temporary office for you over here, So being able to get ahead of anything and predict that's the next thing >> I know. This really also highlights when we tend to talk about us when these data conferences, where the underlying value being here is the creation and stitching together with solutions. But it's the data that's driving it right. The tickets that ranking the the task getting if these reasoning aspect of reasoning with the data predictive are prescriptive, is a personalization benefit thes air. The things that are exposed on this new way of creating >> there's there's some real exciting, very consumable AP eyes out there. One of them all name is in dico io, and this is something that you could just plug in some data. Then I'll make a prediction using just a bunch of learned data set that it already has, and I'LL give you an example WebEx team space way just chat away, and for months and months, I funnel that data to a simple FBI and it comes back and tells me Who's the angriest person who's the happiest person? At the end of the day that the key ingredient all this is AP AP Eyes are becoming the centre point for one data sharing integration coding Middle, where a new kind of middleware evolving? What's your view on this? Because this is an essential part of integration to like If someone wants to adopt a new product, I want to bring it in. It's really >> recognizing that your use case isn't everybody's used case, so you come from a static, fully functioning product to an FBI first approach, you build the FBI, then you build things around it. So when WebEx teams is released, for instance, it had certain functionality there and certain functionality wasn't there. But you could do it to the FBI. So it's partners and Cisco kind of competing at the same time to come up with a better solution. Any time you compete, you know it's good in any time something is open. It's good. So you have these Open A P I's and you have a community trying to come up with the best solution on DH. It's >> and that's really where communities of shining too right now, because you're going to community. They're great at giving feedback. If something something's not right, raise their hand. Appoint honest >> feedback, right? >> Yeah, competition. So Cisco telling Cisco something's not working. You know, you bring in some other people that maybe they're mohr AP to tell you when something's not working. They don't have any dog in the fight. You know, they'LL tell you if something's not working, they'LL give you feedback, and it really enables a better in product and a product that's more form to tailor fit for that user. That use case, >> which is exactly how it should be. Right? We're live at the Computer History Museum for Cisco. Definite Create twenty nineteen John for years my co host, and we're pleased to welcome back to the Cube. Mandy Whaley, senior director of developer experience for Definite Mandy. This event is bursting at the seams. This is the third definite create, but you've been involved for the last five years or so from the beginning, when this was really groundswell talk. Before we're going to talk about a history of Devon, tell our audience what definite is. What definite create is as well, >> Absolutely definite is Cisco's developer community so anywhere that Cisco has a P iis rst case anywhere that people can build on top of our platforms. Definite is the community that enables those developers. So we do. You know a lot of connecting of people within the community way also do a lot of developer enablement Sample code Documentation Blog's Learning Resource is in person workshops, online workshops. I lead our developer experienced team, which is our developer advocates who are you know being the voice of developer, helping the developers get inspired in buildings also are definite. Sandbox teams hosted labs. If you want to use some networking FBI's you may not have extra network playing around that you can program against an experiment. So we offer reserved hosted labs that anyone can use free by becoming a definite remember and then the other part is our our developer content and support. So really getting the information out there and supporting the developers so definite is our community that enables everyone to build on top of Cisco. >> And this community is now sorry, John. We're both very excited, Assistant Suzy was announcing this morning over five hundred eighty five thousand members strong and the energy and the excitement in the room this morning with the Kino people are jumping at the bid. When you guys talked about WiFi six, I loved the examples that you gave this community is it is engaged. That is one of >> the things that's really exciting. Teo, about working with the definite community is that I feel like the energy that we put in, we get back multiple fold from the community, right, and it's great to see people who started with us maybe five years ago who have, you know, made their first AP I call started down this path, and now they're building full applications and they're here sharing that information by presenting with the community and giving back and that excitement that engagement is really one of the funnest parts of my job. >> Man, you talk about the evolution of definite create definite, pretty good background on that. Tell the story. I know I've been there with you guys since the beginning of the Cube. I know little about, but I want you to tell the story because it was a genesis that came out of what you guys we're seeing in the definite community where Cloud was really becoming part of it. Tell the where the definite created portion came on. And what it means for the definite community and developers at large. >> Yes, absolutely. So I started working with Emmet before Devon. It had a name so before it was actually definite. That was five years ago and way started building the community. We have a developer event within Sisqo live. So we have the definite zone, and it's we offer a lot of our constant and classes and workshops. Their way started getting requests from that audience, saying WAY would like a smaller events with more ability, tohave, you know, deeper conversations more, one on one and just focused on the developer community. And this was when multi Cloud was really starting to become a big piece of the Cisco strategy. Are developers were trying to figure out howto work in that space. Cloud native was taking King off, and that was the first definite create on, which was three years ago. It was a very small venue in San Francisco, and it was our very closest and, you know, deepest engage set of members that came to that first year and then. But we had such great engagement. Some of that energy that you mentioned and everyone who helped build it towards the second year, which we had last year at the Computer History Museum, says same same than you. And what special, definite create. As we really try to get the two parts of our definite community together, the application developers and our infrastructure automation Dev ops teams right, and we try to bring them together. This one event where they can really exchange ideas, you know, get to be talking the same language. This morning we had conversations around WiFi six from the application Developer side Like what does that enable for the application developers and new things you could build? And then, you know, how is that also interesting? Teo, the networking site >> of any demos, are a big part of it. You got the hack a thon camp. Get the camp experience. You can create great tools, but the the events, not your classic event. It's not like that's Get the numbers up. Let's get tennis. Let's make some money. It's not about that vibe. This is a different vibe. It's more of let's make it intimate, somewhat structured, but disorganized enough to be collaborative. >> Yes, it's definitely collaborative, and it's definitely a community focused event over. I think over seventy five percent of the content this year came from the community, so they're here giving back and presenting their workshops. It's also very hands on. Hands on is actually kind of a core definite value. We, like Teo, always give people the ability Teo code something. Try something, build something So you mentioned can't create that is our it's >> it's We call it a build a thon because it's a little more structure >> than a free form hackathon. We start with some use cases. We make the technology available, and they actually started yesterday before the conference even began. Those teams started building solutions, and they'LL be presenting them on Thursday and then >> in the >> conference. We have hands on workshops in small groups with eight people, so you can really, you know, take the time to actually get in, run the code, do the work, ask questions right to the presenter on. And we really want that collaborative. You know, sharing ideas feels very intentional part of building this conference. >> So I'd love to ask you some probing questions around the future of where you see this going because you have the key ingredients are coming together. You mentioned them, so scaling this up it's going to be a challenge because you have definite. You have Definite Zone and Sisqo live, which is the Cisco proper. Then you kind of have this elite community as my words. I guess it's, you know, the best of the best, but it's really a cross section of unique profile of persona is the intention to have these guys then go back to their communities are within the communities. Is that the scale point? Because how do you run these intimate events right and not lose the spirit of the ethos. >> So that's something we're, you know, putting specific thought into because we do want to keep the spirit. We've actually heard that from some of our, you know, kind of core community members that they really want to keep that aspect. So couple of things that we are planning tto help with that one is you may have seen this morning we gave the definite Creator awards. So those air awards for people who contribute to the community and a lot of those are people who have come and learn skills, taken aback to their organizations and been able to scale that out to their organizations. That's something that we're really actively working with people to do and do that in a very organic and community lead way. Um, the other thing that we have been working with is a program called Definite Express. So this is actually where we take a small part of our definite content. We kind of package it up and make it available for anyone to run in their region. Jin so they can have it. You know, in a different country they can have some of the same feeling that we have here some of these same workshops we've had those in. It was about two hundred fifty of those events in forty nine countries. >> So wait, man kind of thing. Yes, it's a physical events. It's not just sass on site services. >> That's right. >> Portable portal >> event and they do workshops just like they are here way. Inject some of the fun, same fun kind of activities. And then we provide all the infrastructure. There are sandbox, >> you hologram in there. I mean, you're so popular you can't attend all of them. >> No, I cannot. >> But I love >> to see on Twitter you can look up definite express and see one's happening, you know, all over the world at the same time, which is really fun. >> And how did those folks that are doing these definite expressed events How are they able to collaborate with you guys provide feedback from what they're experiencing in the field to help create Maur no pun intended helped create more. Definitely more, exactly more opportunities, you know, and really help you guys with this larger event so that they feel like they were in this community. And five hundred eighty five thousand. There's only about four hundred here that can fit in Russian. What's that somebody else? It's like So one of the things >> we do is while we're here at definite create, we do live stream a lot of the content. So it was really fun today. When we finished the keynote, I heard from some people that told me I was in the keynote. I was watching and I started texting my friends. Hey, you got to get on the live stream And that's a great thing to hear from the community because you're giving away for this people to join in. We also have on definite our community chat room. It's on every page, chat with us definite. It gets you right into a room with the developer advocates on our team and other community members, and we see the community there, you know, answering each other's questions, giving us feedback, letting us know what they need to move ahead in their careers and their projects. So that community chat room is really key. >> Give some highlights on what change since just go live Barcelona. What? Some of the important notable successes and work areas that you guys are doing a definite and definite create. >> Right. So we, as we mentioned in the Kino, our community growth, we've reached five hundred eighty five thousand. So that registered Dove nut members, that is, it's great to see that growing. And then we also see those members you know, growing their engagement with them, not going deeper into the material, building, more content, taking it back to their organizations and things like that. Right now we are building up to Cisco Live Us, which is coming up in San Diego in June, will have our full definite zone there. So a lot of exciting activities that were planning for their We hope everybody can come and see us there, and then another thing is, could exchange. So could exchange. We actually announced it a definite create last year and launched it a little bit after definite create code exchanges the place for the community to share their projects so they can anything that is open source. They can share it by sending us there. Have link way curate that end Tio Francisco relevant sort of catalog. If you're looking for a sample to use DNA center and you want to see it in Python, you Khun, go search for exactly that. Get back some projects that the community have submitted. So we're excited to announce this week that we've reached over four hundred projects in code exchange of those curated, you know, projects that have gone to the process and been posted there. That was a really exciting milestone, looking back to create from LA >> So it's working. Yeah. So what's the vibe in? Certainly Cisco. I know Suzy has and Team have been kind of getting a lot of press and praise press externally, praise internally it Cisco, as the big battleship of Cisco, kind of gets on that cloud wave coming multi cloud hot area. >> It is so one of the things that is really exciting as we are seeing a p, I be available across our whole portfolio. So in every area that Cisco has products and up and down the stack at the device layer at the controller layer at the cloud layer. So that's very exciting from a definite perspective, because it gives us more for our community to work with more opportunity for developers. And that changes Ciscos very palpable. It's very exciting. And we're, you know, bringing the definite community into that as much as >> it's from creativity to we saw the demo for a fish about the virtual realities cable first peek in Barcelona. But here, amplifying that with with five six to you could just with virtual reality look at a devices. They see all the staff see with network coverage. Yeah, WeII to do work. >> Yeah, exactly. And >> me, that demo is a great you know, example of this applications meaning infrastructure message, which is really what definite create is about. We wrote an augmented reality application running on a mobile device, but you can check literally seeing the signal strength from all your access points on. So that's just a great example of those two things coming together. >> Speaking of coming together, one of the things that you touched on this a minute ago. But what in the keynote this morning, when I was looking at in the Mirror Rocky demo of the other things that you guys were doing and the evolution of Cisco. I just thought, What CART horse which ones, which was It has definite been really kind of fueling Cisco's evolution. Looking at all of the available, as you mentioned across the product portfolio has been around a long time. Is it is it fair to say that definite has kind of been a fuel for that? And Cisco's going Wow, we've got this phenomenal community were evolving because our customers are we need Teo. Yeah, I think it is. It is very much >> hand in hand. We worked really closely with our product teams and we worked hard to be that voice of the developer with our product teams and Cisco. And it's been a journey that started, you know, five years ago where we knew that the guys were going to come, we knew that there would be a prize across the portfolio and within definite. We really believed in that and are definite community believed in it. And you know, we've been building it very step wise and very intentionally since then. So it's really been a great partnership and a really exciting time to be it Cisco and being a part of that transition. >> Well, I just signed up to chat with you guys since you brought it up earlier. You're having >> your chair stealing the code and check it into the >> codex scene. >> We're gonna blow something for one. So many exciting has been great to watch. You guys, you got the Moroccan green jacket off. >> It's very Rocky demo today. >> Meraki has been a big part of definite success, and within the community's been the reaction's been very positive. It's not in the classic portfolio of collaboration. It's really going to a different What is muraki mean for the development? What? What has it done? What has enabled Why is it important? >> Yeah, so, um, a Rocky has been great because it's one. As Todd mentioned today, they really have this mission of simplifying their experience, and they've done that in there. You I and they've brought that to their developer experience as well, which is really exciting for me. Rocky is Cloud Managed Network Club managed WiFi, and then they have a very happy I'd driven approach where you can automate almost everything you could do through the eyes. And then there's additional services that you could get from Iraqi, like indoor location data and things like that. So it really opens up opportunities for both of our parts of our definite audience application developers who might be writing an indoor location based application or doing something with the cameras that we saw today on DH, then the infrastructure automation side who can very, very efficiently, you know, manage and deploy their networks. >> It's nice connective tissue for the developers kind of gives you best table two worlds, wireless on the front end, back and network connections. So it really becomes a big part than seems like >> it is. It is. And that's another reason why we were so excited about the new MURAKI developer hub that Todd adults today on Definite because it really is a place where we can show that connective aspect of it. I have all the code and use cases that really connects this to audience. >> We'LL talk will be very excited to know that some of your community members actually have Iraqi devices at their house. They way, they're running their cameras at their homes and everything's >> that's right. >> So being I think it's on the Web, one of the, if not the on ly conference community that brings together the APP developers, those girls and guys thie infrastructure, folks, What's one of your favorite stories that really shows thes two worlds coming together, understanding each other, communicating anything that really sticks out of the last few years for you? Gosh, there's >> many and a lot of them are just hallway conversations that I might stop by and hear people connecting and kind of learning about. You know what each person works on and learning to kind of speak the same language and get together. One story that I think really stands out as a big success is around a partner that we work with who does indoor location applications. And there's pure software company right. They write mobile applications that do indoor location, and but they they need a network underneath that, and so we have had a great coming together of some of our main Cisco loyal people who go out and stall the network's connecting with partners like that who come from the pier software side. We've written applications on DSO. That's that's a great one. And that is really something that we see replicating in many places. And I feel like some of the hallway conversations here are, you know, starting the next stories that happened like that. >> This is one of some of the best cause they're natural. Welcome to theCUBE. >> Thrilled to be here. >> We're thrilled to have you, and you have a couple of really interesting things that I want to kick off with. First off all, you played vodgeball. If you're not familiar, vodgeball is a really cool, starts on the Sunday right before VMworld, benefits Wounded Warriors, which is fantastic, but it's a serious game. I've played before, I was terrified for my life. What was your experience like this year? >> It's a great event and they've been doing it for the last several years, I mean, so it was my first time I was able to participate, but it basically is a lot of the partners and exhibitors here, they put a team together, and it's to support the Wounded Warrior Foundation, so it's a great charity and a great cause. But yeah, it was very intense, because when they asked me to play, I was like, "Dodgeball, vodgeball, how hard could it be, right? "You just pick up the ball "and you just throw it at somebody, right?" I had no idea that this is like a legit thing. There's referees, there's rules, there's strategy. I mean, it was intense. And, you know, we had fun. I think everybody had fun, but I will say there were, there were some teams that were very serious and very determined to do well. And they did. >> Nobody injured, I hope. >> Not that I recall. Oh, no, there was one injury, there was one injury. Somebody was going backwards and fell into somebody who was taking a picture and there was blood. Yeah, there was a little bit of blood. But hey, again, for a good cause, right? >> The people at VMworld, they're serious about whatever they're doing. >> Very serious. >> There you go. >> That's for sure. >> Something also that interests me about your background is you have a really interesting connection with an industry that people wouldn't think, oh, there's a similarity between wrestling, WWE, and Dell EMC. On the customer experience side, you've talked with John Cena, who I admire for what he does on TV. Tell us about the similarities that you and he discussed about the customer experience. >> Yeah, so it was last year. There's an event, it's actually a legit thing, called Customer Experience Day. And so, at Dell EMC, we had, you know, different events planned at the different locations, and there were speakers that came in. Matter of fact, if you were in the Santa Clara area, they had Matthew McConaughey, was the individual that they had come there. But we had John Cena, which I think we probably got a better deal out of that. But your point, it's like, what's the similarities, and I even asked him as we were getting ready to do the interview, I was chatting with him a bit, and I was like, "You probably have no idea what we do," and "Why are you here? "This is like completely different." And he was like, "Absolutely not, "I am so looking forward to this because "I'm going to talk to new people that "I've never talked to before. "What we do and what you do is very similar "because it really is about that customer experience "and making sure that people enjoy it, "you connect with those customers, "you connect with those users out there. "It's all about, you know, how the technology "on our side is getting consumed "and what our users are able to do, "but it's also the products that they're putting out there, "just from an entertainment perspective." And he got up there and he spoke for 20 minutes, and it was amazing. I mean, he just did such a great job. >> So, Scott, I actually worked with you at EMC, and you've been at EMC for just a few years. I still have to say, it's now Dell EMC, 'cause for some reason, LinkedIn says I worked for Dell EMC for 10 years. I worked for EMC Corporation. Those of us in Massachusetts, EMC had a profound impact on technology, but how long's it been now, you've been there? And tell us how you got to your current roles. >> With EMC and now Dell EMC, I just hit my 27th year, so going on 28 years now. Badge number 399, for anybody that's still keeping score. >> Lisa: You started as a child, right? >> I was 11 when I started. It was before they changed the child labor laws. But no, it's great. I mean, you think about how the company's changed and evolved in that period of time, and I think the thing that I've always loved and continued to love about the company and the organization is just how we continued to evolved, we continued to change, we continued to adapt to what's happening in the technology space because, you know, as you know, things are constantly moving, and I think that the difference over the last several years is that the rate of change has completely accelerated, with new ways to be able to deliver IT, new ways to basically consume the things that we've been developing for years. I come on the storage side of things, and just from a company perspective, the portfolio has expanded to include pretty much anything from a technology perspective. So it's really, really cool to be able to be a part of that. >> Okay, so, Scott, you know, there are many in the storage industry that have perspective, but I mean, you've been there since, like, I guess day one of Symmetrix. And Symmetrix, through DMX, through VMAX, it's still a product line, it's still going strong. You know, why is VMAX important in enterprise tech today? >> You know, you think about it, and it really is cool, and it's something that I work closely with throughout my career, but you think about examples of technology that have been available on the market for 30 or so years. I mean, I can only come up with two. If you can come up with one, let me know, but I think of mainframes, and I think of Symmetrix VMAX, right? And they're still a key part of technology because there's a tremendous amount of trust. The world's most mission-critical workloads run on those environments. It's a proven platform that still continues to be really, really, a core part of an IT infrastructure for many, many organizations. >> Yeah, it always resonated with me. You talk to anyone in that storage organization, and they've all ready Only the Paranoid Survive. So, you know, until microprocessor's going strong, you know, lots of discussion about where Moore's Law is going. But right, you know, I think back to the early days of things like SRDF, really changed what's going on. But now, I mean, you know, Flash is the discussion. We've just been talking to some of your peers about software-defined storage. What are some of those key customer conversations you're seeing these days out there in the market? >> I think, you know, from a modernization perspective, clearly Flash is becoming the predominant way people want to store their information, right? That's, you know, you think about Flash when it was initially introduced years and years ago, it provided a solution for high performance requirements. It was really, really fast, much faster than mechanical media at the time, but it was also really, really expensive, and I think what's changed is kind of two things. Number one, the media costs have come down pretty dramatically, right? But still more expensive than spinning drives. But the arrays themselves have also become much more efficient in terms of how they're able to take advantage of Flash. You think of things like data reduction technologies, compression, dedupe, fim provisioning, snapshots, all of these types of things, where we typically see about a four to one space efficiency. So if I've got 100 terabytes, I'm paying for that 100 terabytes of capacity, but through all of these technologies, I can make that look like 400 terabytes to the outside world. So that dramatically changes the cost curb and makes it way more efficient, way more affordable than what people have previously done with things like hybrid arrays or even spinning drives. So it's cool, and, you know, you think of what's happening in the future, there are different memory-based technologies, storage class memory technologies that are going to start to become available in the marketplace, and it'll be interesting to see architecturally how that's going to impact some of the things that are available in the marketplace today, so it's going to be very interesting, I think, in the next couple of years, as the technology continues to evolve, and you're able to do things from a performance density capacity perspective that, you know, today you're just kind of getting to sort of the tip of the iceberg in terms of some of the niche technologies that are out there. These are things that are going to become much, much more mainstream going forward. So, again, people often think that storage, snoreage, right? It's the boring stuff, right? The only time people care about storage is if something breaks, right? They just assume that it's going to work. But again, there's a lot of really cool things happening from an innovation, from a technology perspective, and again, being on the technology side and getting to work very closely with the engineering guys, and the product managers, and then being able to talk to customers and users and understand kind of what challenges they're facing today and where they see things going in the future. Again, it's a great opportunity because you get to see all of this stuff coming together. So, it continues to be fun. I don't know if I can do another 27 years, but I'm hoping to get at least a couple more good ones. >> You've got like another 30 before retirement age. >> Right, right. >> Yeah, I think you're right. I'll do the math on that. Maybe not quite 30, but I appreciate it anyway, Stu. >> So, speaking of innovation, Michael Dove was talking about that this morning, and I thought it was cool that he and Pat shared some laughs on, you know, now that the accommodation is done with Dell EMC and they own VMware, there's competitors that are now partners, et cetera. Can you talk to us, you talked about kind of talking with product groups. How are you facilitating innovation and integration, say, with the VMAX with VMware? How is that kind of going? >> So, VMware is definitely a big, obviously, partner for us. But they also, their customers, in the use cases that they have, fit in very well with our technology and our systems, specifically, I'll talk specifically around VMAX. You know, you look at some of the really large environments that are out there. I know customers that have 50,000 plus VMs running on a single storage system, right? And, you know, you think of just how massive that is, and you put 50,000 anything on one storage system, you know, you need to make sure that you've got the performance, you've got the scale, you've got the reliability, you've got the data services. Those are the things that people need to be able to do consolidation at that scale, and that's where certainly VMAX is kind of the technology that continues to be core for those types of workloads. But again, there's always new things that are coming up, and there's also, you know, a set of new challenges that users are always looking at. And again, Flash is a good example where, you know, you're starting to hit the limits in terms of what you can do with traditional mechanical media, but the Flash was still too expensive at the time. But again, taking advantage of that data reduction technology and building it into the system, and being able to do it in a way that doesn't compromise any of the data services, it doesn't impact performance, it doesn't change the reliability, or the availability of the applications and the workloads. I mean, that's what kind of users sort of expect from us, and that's what we deliver. >> I think you've still got 30 years in you just, you know, with this passion and excitement that you're talking about now. >> We'll see, we'll see. Well, maybe you guy will have me back next year and we can see where we are then. >> Well, we are so thankful to you for stopping by theCUBE for your first time. Raejeanne Skillern | Google Cloud Next 2017


 

>> Hey welcome back everybody. Jeff Frick here with theCUBE, we are on the ground in downtown San Francisco at the Google Next 17 Conference. It's this crazy conference week, and arguably this is the center of all the action. Cloud is big, Google Cloud Platform is really coming out with a major enterprise shift and focus, which they've always had, but now they're really getting behind it. And I think this conference is over 14,000 people, has grown quite a bit from a few years back, and we're really excited to have one of the powerhouse partners with Google, who's driving to the enterprise, and that's Intel, and I'm really excited to be joined by Raejeanne Skillern, she's the VP and GM of the Cloud Platform Group, Raejeanne, great to see you. >> Thank you, thanks for having me. >> Yeah absolutely. So when we got this scheduled, I was thinking, wow, last time I saw you was at the Open Compute Project 2015, and we were just down there yesterday. >> Yesterday. And we missed each other yesterday, but here we are today. >> So it's interesting, there's kind of the guts of the cloud, because cloud is somebody else's computer that they're running, but there is actually a computer back there. Here, it's really kind of the front end and the business delivery to people to have the elastic capability of the cloud, the dynamic flexibility of cloud, and you guys are a big part of this. So first off, give us a quick update, I'm sure you had some good announcements here at the show, what's going on with Intel and Google Cloud Platform? >> We did, and we love it all, from the silicon ingredients up to the services and solutions, this is where we invest, so it's great to be a part of yesterday and today. I was on stage earlier today with Urs Holzle talking about the Google and Intel Strategic Alliance, we actually announced this alliance last November, between Diane Green and Diane Bryant of Intel. And we had a history, a decade plus long of collaborating on CPU level optimization and technology optimization for Google's infrastructure. We've actually expanded that collaboration to cover hybrid cloud orchestration, security, IOT edge to cloud, and of course, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. So we still do a lot of custom work with Google, making sure our technologies run their infrastructure the best, and we're working beyond the infrastructure to the software and solutions with them to make sure that those software and solutions run best on our architecture. >> Right cause it's a very interesting play, with Google and Facebook and a lot of the big cloud providers, they custom built their solutions based on their application needs and so I would presume that the microprocessor needs are very specific versus say, a typical PC microprocessor, which has a more kind of generic across the board type of demand. So what are some of the special demands that cloud demands from the microprocessor specifically? >> So what we've seen, right now, about half the volume we ship in the public cloud segment is customized in some way. And really the driving force is always performance per dollar TCO improvement. How to get the best performance and the lowest cost to pay for that performance. And what we've found is that by working with the top, not just the Super Seven, we call them, but the Top 100, closely, understanding their infrastructure at scale, is that they benefit from more powerful servers, with performance efficiency, more capability, more richly configured platforms. So a lot of what we've done, these cloud service providers have actually in some cases pushed us off of our roadmap in terms of what we can provide in terms of performance and scalability and agility in their infrastructure. So we do a lot of tweaks around that. And then of course, as I mentioned, it's not just the CPU ingredients, we have to optimize in the software level, so we do a lot of co-engineering work to make sure that every ounce of performance and efficiency is seen in their infrastructure. And that's how they, their data center is their cost to sales, they can't afford to have anything inefficient. So we really try to partner to make sure that it is completely tailor-optimized for that environment. >> Right, and the hyperscale, like you said, the infrastructure there is so different than kind of classic enterprise infrastructure, and then you have other things like energy consumption, which, again, at scale, itty bitty little improvements >> It's expensive. >> Make a huge impact. And then application far beyond the cloud service providers, so many of the applications that we interact with now today on a day to day basis are cloud-based applications, whether it is the G Suite for documents or this or that, or whether it's Salesforce, or whether we just put in Asana for task tracking, and Slack, and so many of these things are now cloud-based applications, which is really the way we work more and more and more on our desktops. >> Absolutely. And one of the things we look at is, applications really have kind of a gravity. Some applications are going to have a high affinity to public cloud. You see Tustin Dove, you see email and office collaboration already moving into the public cloud. There are some legacy applications, complex, some of the heavier modeling and simulation type apps, or big huge super computers that might stay on premise, and then you have this middle ground of applications, that, for various reasons, performance, security, data governance, data gravity, business need or IP, could go between the public cloud or stay on premise. And that's why we think it's so important that the world recognizes that this really is about a hybrid cloud. And it's really nice to partner with Google because they see that hybrid cloud as the end state, or they call it the Multi Cloud. And their Kubernetes Orchestration Platform is really designed to help that, to seamlessly move those apps from on a customer's premise into the Google environment and have that flow. So it's a very dynamic environment, we expect to see a lot of workloads kind of continue to be invested and move into the public cloud, and people really optimizing end-to-end. >> So you've been in the data center space, we talked a little bit before we went live, you've been in the data center space for a long, long time. >> Long time. >> We won't tell you how long. (laughing) >> Both: Long time. >> So it must be really exciting for you to see this shift in computing. There's still a lot of computing power at the edge, and there's still a lot of computing power now in our mobile devices and our PCs, but so much more of the heavy lift in the application infrastructure itself is now contained in the data center, so much more than just your typical old-school corporate data centers that we used to see. Really fun evolution of the industry, for you. >> Absolutely, and the public cloud is now one of the fastest growing segments in the enterprise space, in the data center space, I should say. We still have a very strong enterprise business. But what I love is it's not just about the fact that the public cloud is growing, this hybrid really connects our two segments, so I'm really learning a lot. It's also, I've been at Intel 23 years, most of it in the data center, and last year, we reorganized our company, we completely restructured Intel to be a cloud and IoT company. And from a company that for multiple decades was a PC or consumer-based client device company, it is just amazing to have data center be so front and center and so core to the type of infrastructure and capability expansion that we're going to see across the industry. We were talking about, there isn't going to be an industry left untouched by technology. Whether it's agriculture, or industrial, or healthcare, or retail, or logistics. Technology is going to transform them, and it all comes back to a data center and a cloud-based infrastructure that can handle the data and the scale and the processing. >> So one of the new themes that's really coming on board, next week will it be a Big Data SV, which has grown out of Hadoop and the old big data conversation. But it's really now morphing into the next stage of that, which is machine learning, deep learning, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, virtual reality, so this whole 'nother round that's going to eat up a whole bunch of CPU capacity. But those are really good cloud-based applications that are now delivering a completely new level of value and application sophistication that's driven by power back at the data center. >> Right. We see, artificial intelligence has been a topic since the 50s. But the reality is, the technology is there today to both capture and create the data, and compute on the data. And that's really unlocking this capabilities. And from us as a company, we see it as really something that is going to not just transform us as a business but transform the many use cases and industries we talked about. Today, you or I generate about a gig and a half of data, through our devices and our PC and tablet. A smart factory or smart plane or smart car, autonomous car, is going to generate terabytes of data. Right, and that is going to need to be stored. Today it's estimated only about 5% of the data captured is used for business insight. The rest just sits. We need to capture the data, store the data efficiently, use the data for insights, and then drive that back into the continuous learning. And that's why these technologies are so amazing, what they're going to be able to do, because we have the technology and the opportunity in the business space, whether it's AI for play or for good or for business, AI is going to transform the industry. >> It's interesting, Moore's Law comes up all the time. People, is Moore's Law done, is Moore's Law done? And you know, Moore's Law is so much more than the physics of what he was describing when he first said that in the first place, about number of transistors on a chip. It's really about an attitude, about this unbelievable drive to continue to innovate and iterate and get these order of magnitude of increase. We talked to David Floyer at OCP yesterday, and he's talking about it's not only the microprocessors and the compute power, but it's the IO, it's the networking, it's storage, it's flash storage, it's the interconnect, it's the cabling, it's all these things. And he was really excited that we're getting to this massive tipping point, of course in five years we'll look back and think it's archaic, of these things really coming together to deliver low latency almost magical capabilities because of this combination of factors across all those different, kind of the three horseman of computing, if you will, to deliver these really magical, new applications, like autonomous vehicles. >> Absolutely. And we, you'll hear Intel talk about Jevons Paradox, which is really about, if you take something and make it cheaper and easier to consume, people will consume more of it. We saw that with virtualization. People predicted oh everything's going to slow down cause you're going to get higher utilization rates. Actually it just unlocked new capabilities and the market grew because of it. We see the same thing with data. Our CEO will talk about, data is the new oil. It is going to transform, it's going to unlock business opportunity, revenue growth, cost savings in environment, and that will cause people to create more services, build new businesses, reach more people in the industry, transform traditional brick and mortar businesses to the digital economy. So we think we're just on the cusp of this transformation, and the next five to 10 years is going to be amazing. >> So before we let you go, again, you've been doing this for 20 plus years, I wasn't going to say anything, she said it, I didn't say it, and I worked at Intel the same time, so that's good. As you look forward, what are some of your priorities for 2017, what are some of the things that you're working on, that if we get together, hopefully not in a couple years at OCP, but next year, that you'll be able to report back that this is what we worked on and these are some of the new accomplishments that are important to me? >> So I'm really, there's a number of things we're doing. You heard me mention artificial intelligence many, many times. In 2016, Intel made a number of significant acquisitions and investments to really ensure we have the right technology road map for artificial intelligence. Machine learning, deep learning, training and inference. And we've really shored up that product portfolio, and you're going to see these products come to market and you're going to see user adoption, not just in my segment, but transforming multiple segments. So I'm really excited about those capabilities. And a lot of what we'll do, too, will be very vertical-based. So you're going to see the power of the technology, solving the health care problem, solving the retail problem, solving manufacturing, logistics, industrial problems. So I like that, I like to see tangible results from our technology. The other thing is the cloud is just growing. Everybody predicted, can it continue to grow? It does. Companies like Google and our other partners, they keep growing and we grow with them, and I love to help figure out where they're going to be two or three years from now, and get our products ready for that challenge. >> Alright, well I look forward to our next visit.
