I'm Lisa Martin with Stu Miniman, and Stu and I are pleased to welcome to theCUBE, Rose Schooler, the Corporate Vice-President of the data center sales at Intel. Rose, welcome to theCUBE. >> It's great to meet you guys. Pleasure to meet you. >> Great to have you here too. Thank you for joining us in the very popular, buzzy DevNet zone. >> It's crazy. The vibe here is really, really good the last couple days. >> It's been amazing, amazing. So you've been at Intel for quite a long time. >> 30 Years. >> 30 years also since Cisco started doing a customer partner event, lot's happened in 30 years. I'd love to understand your role at Intel, and also, as we're here talking about all of these waves in innovation from 5G and Wi-Fi 6 to GPUs everywhere, to Bobol, edge, what are some of the things that you're hearing from customers when it comes to modernizing their data centers? >> That's a great question, in terms of modernization of infrastructure, and there's some really interesting trends that I think are occurring, and I think the one that's getting a lot of buzz is really edge computing. And what we're finding is, depending on the use case, it can be an enterprise application, where you're trying to get localization of your data. It could be an IOT application where it's really critical for latency or bandwidth to keep compute and data close to the thing, if you will, or it could be mobile edge computing where you want to do something like analytics and AI on a video stream before you tax the bandwidth of the cellular infrastructure with that data stream. So across the board, I think edge is super exciting, and you can't talk about edge without, like I said, talking about artificial intelligence. Another big trend whether it's running native, running with an accelerator, an FPGA, I think we're seeing a myriad of use cases in that space. >> Yeah, I'd love to if we could, dig in a little bit to the edge piece, because you're right, it's super exciting there. It's got to be some different requirements for what's happening at the edge as opposed to what's happening at the hyper scales or the service providers or the traditional enterprise. So we've always seen over the years, Intel will make things into the chip. They'll do their magic to make sure it's there. What are the requirements you're hearing from customers that are help driving what the next innovations will come from Intel with the edge? >> So, yeah, let me break it into a couple domains. We'll talk first of all to technology, and then we'll talk about the go to market. Is that okay? >> Perfect. >> From a technology perspective, you've got to look at the environment of which you're deploying the edge. So if you're in the enterprise, your IO is pretty traditional; you're going to use ethernet and that sort of thing. You move over into the cellular space, mobile edge computing, you have different back haul technologies that are leveraged. But what gets super interesting is when you go to IOT, and when you're in IOT, there's a tremendous amount of fragmentation. The IO fragmentation, the protocol fragmentation is pretty pervasive, so one of the big challenges is how do you standardize and really open up the development of those protocols to allow, and what I like to say, is take down the frictionless data. You don't want any impediments to the data getting to the compute where at the compute, you can run your analytics and really start to take data and transition it to business intelligence. So, fragmentation is really an interesting problem statement from a technology perspective, and there are some interesting concepts around how do you use 5G because of the variability and the bandwidth and the different lanes and protocols and SLAs that exist in that multilane highway, if you will, of 5G. I think it presents some interesting technology options to master that fragmentation. From a go to market perspective, you can see a number of situations where we would call them snowflake implementations. You'd build them once, and you'd sell them once. We had people that were very excited about the number of proof of concepts they were doing. Hey, we just implemented and deployed our 150th or 200th proof of concept, and then when you'd get them at dinner at night, I'd say, how much money are ya making? Yeah, it's not really revenue generating. So we found that really pulling together solutioning with our ecosystem partners, and Cisco is a critical partner in this space, we've been able to create solutions that we co-market and co-sell that allow for scale. So we put a program in place, and we're starting to see some really interesting results from that perspective. >> So let's talk about 5G. One of the things that Chuck Robins was talking about yesterday was this expansion in 5G, lot of opportunities, but you're saying that brings challenges to customer environments. How are Intel and Cisco going to help customers start to unlock the value of 5G once that expansion becomes a reality? >> Yeah, I think that's a great question, and we have to look at how we align around standards. How do we align around really creating the initial use cases? I think that's what everybody's big question is, right? What's the $64,000 question with 5G? It's what are our initial use cases beyond LTE offload. Okay, so we have our use case around LTE offload, but one of the areas that we see a lot of excitement around, and I mentioned it earlier, is video. So how can we partner with Cisco? Look at what that implementation looks like, not only on a streetlamp but also in a digital sign. It might be now an interesting Trojan horse, if you will, for a small sale, and what's then that backend implementation look like, and once we understand either the video use case or the public safety and security use case, how do we then create those solutions to really bring the technology to market? And I think that's an excellent opportunity for Intel and Cisco to work together on. >> All right, Rose, let's bring it into your core, the data center group. >> Sure, let's talk about data center. >> The DevNet zone's been really buzzing the whole time, but I tell you the takeover this morning on ACI, really that core networking group is overwhelming me. I practically had people on our set here, because they were all coming to get inside of here. So what's the latest? Any new announcements in the last couple of months or updates for-- >> So, like I've said, I've been at Intel 30 years, and I've been to a lot of launch events, but at the begin of April, we had our first data centric launch. We had seven different product launches. It ranged from the edge to the network to cloud and multicloud, and covered compute to storage and memory to connectivity like ethernet. And it was the most pervasive, exciting launch we've done at least in my 30 years, especially on the data center side. And like I said, we were able to show how the platform ingredients and the center point of that was obviously Intel's scale Xeon, second generation of Xeon scalable architecture. That is the cornerstone, supplementing it with how we process data on that platform, how do we move data with some of our new ethernet technologies, how do we store data with our intel data center, Optane persistent memory, was really kind of an end to end exciting launch event. We had 95 world records that we broke. Yeah, it was really an exciting day, very exciting day. And again, move, process, store. Talking about from a value proposition and customers, how do you really propel insights? Simply said, how do you use workload specific capabilities to create acceleration of business intelligence? And we had announcements around instruction sets, specifically in the CPU for artificial intelligence. As an example, with 14X improvement over a standard CPU by using that in structure, we had how do you create business resiliency with hardware security features that weren't integrating? And really how do you get acceleration of new services around some technologies around hardware and software, combination of the orchestration of those two? So some really great, great announcements; it was fun. >> To say it was meaty sounds like a massive understatement, but tell us a little bit about how customers are reacting? Because one of the status check Robins also talked about yesterday was that less than 1% of data, organizations are getting value out of less than 1% of it, so this data centric launch, super meaty. How is it going to position Intel and your partner ecosystem to help your customers start turning that dial up so that they're actually getting more value out of that data they know is gold but it's dark? >> Yeah, no, I think that's an excellent question, and you can look at IOT use cases like we talked about. In an IOT use case, it's end to end. You have to compute at the edge in the network and then the multicloud. You have to move the data, whether it be wireless or wire line technology, so I think that's a pretty standard answer and approach to that question. But when we also look at trends that we're seeing in the market, and we see things like how much video content is really becoming pervasive and the data challenges that that creates. And you look at technologies like Intel Optane data center persistent memory, and you have a new technology that solves a lot of problems around capacity issues, capacity in an affordable price point. You have a technology that solves problems around persistence. How do I minimize my downtime from minutes to seconds? And what does that mean in terms of value? So we can sit here, and, you know, Intel is really good about talking about features and new instruction sets, but at the end of the day it comes down to how do I make more money, how do I save more money and offer new services that are specific that my customers are asking for on a real time basis? And I think the portfolio of that launch really kind of solidified that value proposition. >> Rose, I was out living on the vendor side when Cisco launched UCS. There were many in the marketplace that said, why is Cisco getting into this business? Compute's kind of played out. They're all pretty much the same. Intel's dominant in that position. Just choose your favorite flavor and it's there. We look at where we are today. There's a lot going on in the compute space. There's Cisco, the rest of your partners and the like. It's going to be a pretty exciting time, so to be working in this. And you've seen some of those ebbs and flows over the years. >> I have, and I think I should start by wishing them a 10 year anniversary. I think it's the 10 year anniversary of UCS. But what's fascinating is the evolution that compute has gone through. I think when we started down the journey together with Cisco on UCS, it was, I'm going to make servers, and that's kind of the playing field for the technology. But when you think about the evolution of storage and software defined storage and you think about the evolution of networking and the transition to network function virtualization, you now have a common platform that can host a myriad of different applications. So to answer your question, the evolution went from I'm going to build a server, and I think their initial position was really strong in blades, which leverages a lot of their existing relationships and customer relationships and has really grown to now I have a compute platform for server storage network. I have the ability to play in multiple spaces, leverage my channel relationships. So I think the transformation has been amazing, and then when you think about how do I take those assets, and leverage them and bring them to the edge that's evolving nothing but opportunity for both Intel and Cisco. >> So here we are, in the middle of Cisco's fourth quarter fiscal 19. They had a very strong FY 18. The quarterly Q3 results that they released just last month, really good, strong growth across infrastructure platforms, applications, security. As we look at this continuing partnership with Cisco and Intel, what are you excited about with all the momentum that you clearly talked about with Intel and Cisco, going into Cisco's fiscal year of 2020? >> Well, I think we both have an awesome opportunity. We have just launched, as I said, the Intel second generation Xeon scalable processors. We are very well-aligned with Cisco on that technology, so what do we need to do? We have that; we have Optane data center persistent memory. So we have a great core set of ingredients, not to mention ethernet and SSDs where our job in 2020, their fiscal year 2020 is to really drive adoption. Work together on co-marketing, work together on co-selling, and since we have such a collective, strong value proposition, I think there's a tremendous opportunity in refresh, new customer accounts, et cetera to really drive mutual growth which is the foundation of the best types of relationships, when we're growing together. >> Awesome, well, Rose it's been a pleasure to have you on the program this afternoon. >> Thank you so much. We're pleased to welcome back a couple of our alumni. To my right Eric Herzog, CMO of IBM Storage. Eric it's always great to have you. >> Great. >> And you fashion choices on the CUBE. >> Always wear a Hawaiian shirt for the CUBE. >> I know, it's a thing. And we've also got Evaristus Mainsah, General Manager of IBM Cloud Private Ecosystem. Evaristus it's great to have you back on the program. >> Thank you very much, delighted to be here. >> So guys here we are, we're in the dove nut zone. Lots of collaboration, lots of conversations day one of Cisco Live. But this events been around for 30 years. Long time, I think Chuck Robins said this morning what also turned 30 this year is Tetris. Anybody a big fan of Tetris? So, so much progress, so much change. I know you've seen a lot of it. Eric lets start with you. The global economy, what are the impacts it's having on IT? >> Well I'd say the number one thing is everyone is recognized the most valuable asset is data. It's not gold, it's not silver, it's not plutonium and it definitely isn't oil, it's all about data. And whether it be a global Fortune 500, a midsize company or Herzogs Bar & Grill, data is your most valuable asset. So at IBM Storage, what we've done is making sure that our focus is on being data-driven. It's all about solutions, it's not about speeds and feeds. Of course, having done this for 35 years I could have whacked poetically on speeds and feeds. And even if you have some speeds and feeds that Stu may not even remember anymore. That said, it's really about data, it's not about storage speeds and feeds. How really storage is that critical foundation for applications, workloads and use cases. And that's what's most important. >> Yeah, so Eric, when they rolled out on stage this morning that 30 year old box with ribbon cable, yeah, that predated a little bit when I was looking at IT. But, I remember when I started in IT, when we talked about security, the main thing was lock the door of the cabinet that everything was in there, because it was kind of self-contained. Security's gone through a few changes in the last you know 20 25 years though. Maybe you could talk a little bit about that kind of security resiliency. Obviously, something that's impacted the network for a long time, something that IBM sees front and center. >> What I think the big deal is what most people think when they think of security, is I got to buy security software. So I got to call up IBM Security or RSA or the Intel Security Division and buy some security software. And while that's great the reality is as many people have written about, in fact Wikibon SiliconANGLE's written about it. Close to 98% of all enterprises, and I mean big enterprises now are going to get to be broken into. And you've seen this all over the news. So the key thing is once they're inside, storage can help you with a cyber resiliency play. And at IBM Storage whether that be data at rest encryption. Whether that be malware or ransomware protection. We put together a whole set of technology that when the bad guys in the house they can't steal the TV. Because we've locked it down. It's almost as if it was in a safe. Maybe it's almost like the cloak in science fiction where you can't even see the Romulan ship, because it's cloaked. Well guess what, that's what IBM storage can do for your data and it is your most valuable asset. So critical to cyber resiliency. >> So helping customers go from reactive to this expectation breach has happened very very frequently every few seconds to being proactive? >> Yeah, I mean. >> Eventually predictive? >> Well what we do is for example with our Spectrum Protect software. When there's a malware or ransomware attack, what happens is they always go after you're secondary data sets first. I know that sounds weird but they go after your backups, your snapshots and your replicas. 'Cause when they attack your primary data, if they've you can just recover from a backup they can't hold you for $10 million of ransom. So our Spectrum Protect software for example, when it sees anomalous activity in backup data sets, sends an email on a warning out to all the admins and says you have weird activity going on, you might want to check it out and that way you would know. Because secondarity is attacked first in a cyber resiliency strategy. >> You know, the other thing we're seeing a lot is just the scope of what's happening in IT. When you talk about things like scale and you talk about you know edge computing and so much change going on. There's got to be AI in there or machine learning to help us because humans alone can't keep up with what's going on here. Tell us a little bit about that Eric. >> So Big data and AI is like the hot topic right now. Cyber resiliency is important 'cause people obviously have been buying security software for a while. So it's more what we do is really an adjunct to that. In the case of Big data and AI, it's a brand new open field. Everyone is looking for solutions in both of those spaces. We have created a complete set of data infrastructure we've called the AI pipeline. It involves not only physical storage arrays but a whole bunch of software. In fact our Spectrum Discover software which allows you to create metadata catalogs about file and object data is being expanded. And we already publicly said this in the second half To include EMC and Netapp and AWS, not just IBM Storage. So it's a critical thing, you've got to make sure the other thing is when you're using AI. Let's say you're going to use AI to run a factory. If the storage goes down, those robots aren't working. So storage is that critical underlying foundation. A in a Big data network load to be able to have this pipeline to get the data. But if you don't have the resiliency, the performance and the availability of the underlying storage everything shuts down if the storage fails. 'Cause the AI software won't run. So that's how we see fitting in to their both the critical foundation also this AI data pipeline with all of our software. >> So before we get in to this Cisco partnership with Evaristus, it's one more question Eric for you. As Chief Marketing Officer, you talk about the customers all of the time. In that example that you just gave about the criticality of storage for AI where are you having conversations within customer organizations. Is it at the level of the storage girls and guys or has it gone up to lines of business to executives. >> Yeah so, from an AI perspective it runs a gamut. It could be sometimes the storage people. Sometimes the infrastructure people. A lot of times it's actually in the line of business or at the data scientist level. On the Big data side it's a little bit more mature so people know they need to do analytics versus AI. And so when you look at it from that perspective on that side it's often the storage guy but it's also the data scientist as well. So that's who we talk to to get things rolling. And it's not, we don't just talk to the storage admin for either of them, because they're both so new and they have such a big impact on the data scientists and the analytic engine committees inside of those giant enterprises. >> I can imagine eventually maybe question for you. Of that conversation elevating it up to the sweet sweet. Because if you can't access the data, if it can't be protected, what good is it? Right, it's really, to say it's the lifeblood is a silly thing, but we say it all the time. But it's critical, it's table stakes. >> Well one of the things that's interesting is I just got my Fortune 500 magazine at home, that had the Fortune 500 list in it. And there was an interesting article on AI and the enterprise. And they did a survey according to Fortune magazine, 50% of the CIO's that are in the Fortune 500 said they're using AI and Big data of some type. So it's sweeping the world. And it started of course in HPC in the academics. But now it's going into all enterprises of all types. >> Alright so we've talked a few years about the Versastack Partnership. But the last year or so we've really been talking about where Hybrid cloud and multi-cloud fit in to this. We talked a little bit at IBM Think. Evaristus we talked at another show about some of the IBM Cloud Private. Give us the update where we are with customers and how that fits, Eric lets start with you and Evaristus just go into the partnership. >> Sure from a storage version perspective, we've been talking about a Hybrid multi-cloud now for several years. And in fact I did a presentation two years ago at Cisco Live on Hybrid cloud using Versastack. Today I gave one on the data driven enterprise and why hybrid multi-cloud is important to use. So that was the 30 minutes presentation I did today. So I think the key thing is we make sure that we A our Hybrid it's not going to all public or all private. And we can move data seamlessly back and forth. And then also multi-cloud. When you look at enterprise shops, they're not just going to use IBM Cloud. I wish they would I'm an IBM shareholder but they're not. They use IBM, they're going to use ABS, they're going to use Amazon and in many cases they're going to use some smaller cloud provider. So we make sure that we can move data around across any multi-cloud of various different providers to accompany. But also Hybrid cloud as well. >> So the status talk to use about you know from a partnership Cisco IBM Cloud Private perspective, what's going on there Evaristus? >> Well Thank you very much. Well IBM and Cisco have been partners for a long long time. And what we are doing now is given the realities, the fact that those clients have found themselves in a multi-cloud environment, >> Hybrid multi-cloud environment. What we can do to help clients so they can develop they can test, they can manage the applications in a consistent manner, whether they are on prime or in the cloud. And there are a couple of initiatives that we are announcing. One of them is that IBM Cloud Private is going to run on Hyperflex, so Cisco's Hyperflex. As well as hyperflex, hyper-conversed infrastructure. What it means is a client who currently has hyperflex can have IBM Cloud Private on it. Which effectively means they have themselves a Private Cloud environment that also connects to other public cloud environments and allows you to really begin to work within a Hybrid cloud environment the way that most clients need to. The second initiative is that we will have ACI pods or V pods, virtual ACI, running in the IBM public cloud. Which basically means that again, Cisco customers, ACI Network customers who currently use the produce on Prime will be able to use exactly you know the same control pane to manage their deployments and to manage their security preferences on Prime as they do in the cloud. And this again surrounding the Public Cloud is running on bare metal on the IBM Cloud. >> Alright, Evaristus can you bring us inside a little bit the applications you know. Eric talked about you know data we know is so important. Really it's the applications that are driving that. It's where we're seeing the most change in customers, as to how they're moving or building new applications. And in Hyber cloud it's one of the biggest questions for customers is what do they do with that application portfolio? >> Yes so what we're seeing is clearly because you know. Clients have now lots of different Public clouds. They also have Private clouds to deal with them. They have lots of applications that are currently that need to move right. We believe 20% of those applications have moved, the remaining 80% are still on Prime. And so the trend that we are really seeing is applications moving to the cloud. And the two ways of doing it you could do this by simply lifting and shifting on VM, you get the contraction benefit of your stack right. So you can some cost impacts. But the really interesting way that you see lots of clients moving is modernizing the applications. Because the real valued driver with infinite cloud is not so much cost as innovation. And when you convert those applications into Microsoft this is the right and let me run them in containers it gives them plenty of flexibility. And wasting lots of clients that want to use IBM Cloud Private as a platform to enable that modernization journey. >> So as every industry is living in this Hybrid multi-cloud world for many reasons. But it sounds like to me is that the IBM Cisco relationship is deepening as a result to enable these organizations that are in these very amorphous environments. You know as we see the explosion of Edge and Mobile, that's what it sounds like to me. Is that this long standing partnership is getting deeper and maybe a stronger foundation. To help customers not just live in this Hybrid multi-cloud world but be successful so that their businesses gain competitive advantage. They can identify new products and services and revenue streams. >> Yeah, I think multi-cloud and Hybrid cloud actually requires partnerships. Because as Eric said later on of course you like everybody to be on the IBM Cloud and it's a great cloud. But we recognize that many clients who have a variety of different plights to deal with. They have a variety of different infrastructures. And that's why when you look at IBM Cloud Private which is you know our offering that really enables that Hybrid cloud. It is designed to managed that. So It is multi-model, so if you want to run it as a VM you can, you want to run your containers, you can run serverless, you can run them bare metal. But also, it supports a range of different infrastructure. So not only does it run on Z, it runs on power, it runs on Spectrum Storage. We announce running now on Hyperflex. It also runs on other peoples Public clouds. It runs on Azure, it runs on Amazon web services, it runs on Google Cloud platform, it runs on the IBM Cloud. And the intent here is to enable clients to basically manage and work with that infrastructure as if it was one. The way that Stu said in the data center where you locked everything up. Well it's not like that anymore. But the most that we can do is to enable clients to treat all of that infrastructure as one. And that's what sort of aim to do with our platforms. >> Alright, I guess last question I'd like to get both of your comments on. Is your advice for customers, you know, customers have that they have a lot of you know existing things that they have to deal with, that they're looking to modernize. What advice do you give them? Where do you start them you know I guess you know one of the things you're starting where they are. But you know what are some of the first steps and recommendations that you have for customers today? >> We have a process that works really well, which is called the IBM Garage. Which is effectively a way that we used to co-create with our clients to solve the immediate problems. So a client for example, who is looking at app modernization but isn't sure where to start, which app. What we do is we get their teams together with our teams line of business together with IT and our teams and we spend a couple of days in a design thinking workshop to identify a minimum viable product. Which is something that solves a problem not big enough that it will take forever, but big enough to matter. Then we get our teams to work side-by-side, we code it, we test it, we deploy it, we'll run it in the IBM Cloud. We manage it, at like in one week sprints. And then you spend another few days at the end of week four or five to do a see retrospective to see whether it solved the problem as you expected. And if it did, you pick the next piece of work to continue your journey. So before you know, five weeks in, you have your first application modernized. Or you have your first cloud negative ready. >> Now from a storage perspective it's a little bit easier. We supported storage on bare metal. We supported storage in all the virtual environments. KVM, OVM, obviously VM we're in Hyper V. And now, we've been supporting containers for over two years. So we say is leave no data behind. If certain data needs to stay on bare metal, that's fine we can support that. But we can also transparently migrate data back and forth between the various tiers of container-based virtualization-based or the old style bare metal. So from our perspective, we help them move data around where they need it. And if they're still running in a hybridized world in this case, containers, virtual and bare metal that's fine. If they just go containers that's fine. If they just go virtual it's fine. So for us, because of what we've been supporting now for several years, we can help them on that journey. And traverse from any one of those three layers, which is where data sits in today's data centers and cloud environments. >> So overall a lot of collaboration, a lot of customer choice. Wait, we're surrounded by green. I've got two gentlemen from Veeam here. No, but we're not at VeeamON. We're at Cisco Live 2018 here in Orlando, happy to welcome back to the program Carey Stanton and Rob Emsley. Gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us. >> Ace too. >> All right, yeah, so I was with you guys not too long ago at the VeeamON conference. I had a lot of fun in Chicago, brought back some of the famous popcorn for my family, but we're here in Orlando, so way bigger convention center, 26,000 people. We're all walking a lot, talking a lot about networking in Multi-Cloud and everything there. Tell us a little bit about your experience here at the show and what you've taken. >> Yeah, it's great, thanks, Stu. We have as you may know a tier-one partnership with Cisco. We're a platinum sponsor at this event and we're here all around our relationships with them on their data protection with their hyper-flex and their 32-60 and S2-40 relationships and we continue to see rapid growth in the channel and we have a direct-dedicated team selling with them on a global basis, so here making a lot of new connections across their other business units. >> Rob, I see the Green Veeam booth at almost every show I go to. >> Absolutely. >> How's Cisco different from some of the other ones that we go to? >> Well, one of the the things that Chuck Robins talked about in his keynote yesterday was how they summarize the focus of the company, and there's two specific areas that Veeam works very closely with Cisco on. One is the powering the Multi-Cloud, and unlocking the power of data. Those are two big focuses for us. You remember in Chicago, we're all about Multi-Cloud, On-Premises, Manage Cloud, Software as a Service, the Public Cloud; that's the reality of where data lives, so we're very much in lock-step with Cisco. We've been working with Cisco for several years. We last year became available through their global price list, so we're actually finding that Cisco in the data sensor, especially when you think about conversion infrastructure and hyper-conversion infrastructure, it's an area where we can really compliment what they're doing with their opportunities. >> Yeah, Carey, it's interesting because we go a lot of shows and we're hearing a lot of similar themes. Even I think the last time I'd come to the Cisco Live US show was 2009. Applications and data, it's like, oh, come on, those are just bits running through our pipes. It's not really a big deal. Well, we're here in the DevNet zone. We're talking about how Cisco's been moving up the stacks, how they're enabling companies to build new application, do cool things with wireless and SD-WAN and everything like that. I'm sure you must be seeing big change in a lot of your infrastructure partners that fits, as Rob said, that power of data and where that fits. >> Yeah, we're seeing it across the board and what we like about the relationship we have with Cisco is they look to us as their data availability experts, right? That we go into the data center conversation and they bring us in as their subject-matter experts, and that's where I think they want to expand their footprint in their TEM with their product lines, and whether it's UCS or hyper-flex, and they're bringing us into those discussions because we solve a unique problem that they otherwise wouldn't be able to solve. >> Yeah, Rob, you saw the keynote yesterday. I think we were a little surprised. Diane Green comes walking out there. Cisco of course, big push in Cloud. I've actually interviewed a number of Cisco executives of things like AWS Reinvent and the like. Does the Veeam partnership with Cisco, do you touch on some of the Public Cloud pieces as well as? >> Yeah, very much so. One of the things that Cisco is very focused on is their SOS provider right to market, so that's an area where we've been very focused over the last probably three to four years, building out and enabling often our resellers to become managers providers themselves, but the reality is that you're starting to look at that Public Cloud tie-in, whether it be Microsoft Azure, whether it be AWS or IBM Cloud, so these are really all areas where we can provide an on-ramp to connect any Cisco data center environment and provide a relationship with the Public Cloud, provide that data management level layer. >> Yeah, I think back. Cisco really helped a lot of the channel community mature their market. Went from being the silo network to building data center businesses back eight years ago when we started talking about conversion infrastructure. Today, this week I've interviewed Presidio and WWT. They're talking a lot about how they're helping customers, enabling that Cloud. I'd love to hear your perspectives on the maturation of the channel and how they fit in this multi-cloud world. >> Yeah, I mean, if you look at Veeam, where there are 55,000 channel partners our brand promises to remain a 100% channel-driven company, but having these relationships that are primary Cisco-predominant partners, like WWT, Presidio, ePlus, I think it's just opening up discussions that we otherwise wouldn't have had, and we're seeing 50% of the opportunities that we're closing in the field are Cisco-led opportunities that are being driven from these new channel partners, and so again, I think this is the one plus one equals three story that we talk a lot about, that we're bringing a lot to the table and 50% of the opportunities for them and vice versa for us. >> Yeah, one of the things that we really like about Cisco is their focus on their partner community is extremely high, both from the enablement perspective and the educational perspective. They have a fully resourced partner marketing team, and we've been doing a lot of work with them. One of the things that Cisco has been transitioning to, it sort of fits into your space, is the whole move to marketing in a digital world and the whole need to change the type of content, and this type of content you can think about the video sort of assets becomes so much more important, so we've been working very closely with them to do joint digital marketing. It's very easy sometimes to do joint event-based marketing, but when you start getting into digital, you really have to think outside the box about how you bring two companies together to meet in the digital world, so we've been really doing that to drive joint opportunities, and that's been something that we've really got some some success with from our relationship with Cisco. >> In fact, you were just in Barcelona. >> Yeah, every year they run a marketing summit for their channel partners and ecosystem partners, and we actually won the Cisco marketing innovation award for a digital marketing always on campaign slope, just full of assets for joint digital, for joint Cisco and Veeam customers. >> Congratulations, I did see some of that on some of the social media. Yeah, it's interesting to look at how marketing changes in this new digital world. I ask every CMO I talk to these days is to, "How is digital changing the way things happen?" >> Yeah, and you mentioned our other infrastructure partners and there's no other partner that we've worked with at the size of Cisco that embraced it day one, so they look to Veeam as, "Okay, we're going "to work with Veeam, we're going to go deeper, "we're going to bring them on our global prices," and day one they were, "How can we get intertwined "into what Veeam does extremely well as our digital marketing machine?" And just from the get-go they've just continued to accelerate through that process. >> Yeah, one of the things I know every partner loves when they come to an event like this, there's a lot of customers here. Give us a little insight if you can, either specific examples or give us some of the themes you're hearing from customers at the show. What's top of mind? What're some of the biggest challenges that they're facing today? >> Yeah, I mean, I think what they're looking at doing is from a refresh of legacy backup solutions and replication solutions into modernizing their data center, and so they're looking to Cisco as their experts through the last decade plus, and now that Veeam is tied directly in with Cisco in some of those relationships, so it's from a refresh standpoint, from a modernizing their data center to the hybrid Cloud strategies that it's intertwined. We fit very well into those discussions, and we're seeing our customers come to us in these large ELAs, where Cisco is bringing us in as part of those discussions, so again, where otherwise we would have had a hard time getting into it, their customers are coming and saying, "What is the relevancy? "Should I really be looking at this," and Cisco's backing up those discussions. >> Certainly, to tap down on the data sensor, conversion infrastructure and hyper-conversion infrastructure is top of mind for a lot of the customers that come in by the booth. Certainly, which works well for us, because some of our relationships with our other storage alliance partners, whether it be Pure or NetOut, big partners of Cisco, so rather than one plus one equals three, it's one plus one plus one equals five quite often. We're going together as a group in order to go after opportunities, so that's definitely an area. If you think about conversion, IP Converge, it's always highly virtualized, so that plays very well to where we've built the company from: a big focus on virtual machine availability, but we're just more moving that now to the whole concept of data management across a Multi-Cloud world. >> Yeah, absolutely. One of the things we talk at all the shows is the pace of change and how receptive are customers to making changes. What are you hearing from the customers here? The storage market has long been it's sticky, it's a little bit entrenched, making changes, and networking we used to measure in decades as to you roll this out and then I'll wait for the next major speed bump before we'll do that, and you'll roll that out over years. Today, we think things are moving faster, but we'd love to hear points or counterpoints that you're hearing. >> Well, I think that the customers are looking to Cisco, indirectly to Veeam from removing complexity, and I think what they've seen in the past is they've deployed solutions that have bogged down their process. They look to the Cloud as an agile environment and they look back with their Legacy systems that they know they can't continue, and so from my standpoint, the customers that we talk to consistently is, "Are you gonna be the platform that's gonna allow me "to embrace a hybrid Cloud and to remove the complexity "that I have and to be agile," and so that's constantly what the Veeam messaging is solving, right? Mission critical backup and recovery workloads and doing it at a fraction of the cost and accelerating that Veeam speed. >> Yeah, I mean, if you just take the Legacy backup market, Legacy back up installed base, it seems that the openness to change is greater now than I've ever seen it, and you know I've been playing around in this space for quite a few years, but certainly recently we've found the openness to people to look for something new. Our friends that gotten it always used to say the three things that people worry about, the three Cs: Cost, complexity, and capabilities, and those are still very much top of mind around what causes a customer to say, "Hey, what I've been doing for the last several years "hasn't quite been getting it done for me." I think the big change is that backup as an insurance policy is no longer good enough. I think the ability to leverage your backup infrastructure and the data contained within it is really driving people to think about, that's more of a value to me than simply having an insurance policy. >> Absolutely, backup was never enough. We do backup, I need to restore, but it's about that data. Want to give you the opportunity. Veeam is I think we said kind of a tweener. You're not what I would consider an old company. You've always been a software company, born in the virtualization age, but there's a bunch of newer developer focused and Cloud-native. How does Veeam stay and fight and compete against some of the new ones coming after this multi-billion dollar market? >> Want to take that? >> Yeah, well, I think that we pride ourselves on innovation. We pride ourselves on iterating very quickly, and we pride ourselves on adhering to our NPS score of 73, where there at 300,000 customers, and what we are gonna continue on our path, on what's made us successful, and we know that there's always competition. There's lots of VC money out there, and it's not that we're looking away from what the competition is doing. It's that we believe with our 4000 customers a month, our 133 customers that we close on a daily basis across all segments of SNB, commercial, and enterprise is indicative that our strategy is working. We're not going to stray away. We're just going to look to partners like Cisco and others to expand our target market, but stay true to the solution that we've provided in that virtualization environment. You were at VeeamON. You saw the announcements that we're making to support additional workloads and additional environments in the days to come. >> Yeah, I think our ability to evolve and adapt is second to none, and some of that is just based upon the structure of the company. We're still private, we're still pretty much driving our own growth, and I think that allows us to make decisions quickly and very strategically to allow us to go into the areas that I think people instinctively know what is needed to evolve in this space around supporting multi-Cloud, supporting data as an asset, leveraging it as an asset, and I think that's where we've been fueling, both in an engineering perspective, in a capacity to meet with customers and grow, and that's certainly what's going to I think sustain us as we keep going forward. >> All right, gentlemen, I want to give you a final word as to key takeaways you see here from Cisco Live 2018. >> That we will be here for the duration of the time, and our relationship with Cisco will continue to expand, and that we look forward to meeting everyone at the Veeam booth and walking through our product solutions and meeting the Veeam team and answering any questions they may have, but we're thrilled to be part of the Cisco family, and hopefully, again, in the years to come that we'll just continue to expand our relationship. >> And I'll leave you with an African proverb. Cloud Platform and Honna Interprise Cloud. >> Hello there, and welcome to The Cube conversation here in Palo Alto Studios, I'm John Furrier with The Cube, and we have a special guest here. Susie Wee, who's the vice president and CTO of DevNet at Cisco Systems for a Cube conversation around what's happening in cloud, and really some of the most important trends that are generating out of a new event that she's starting called DevNet Creative, which The Cube will be there. Susie, welcome to this Cube conversation. >> Hi, John. Thanks, it's great to be here. >> So, you were a pioneer within Cisco. You know, superstar technologist, CTO. You helped really put the Cisco DevNet Developer program together. Which as been a huge success. Congratulations. >> Thank you. >> And that's been, you know, Cisco has a big community of geeks. They're super smart. They like to surf the web and learn, and develop new stuff on Cisco, but there's also a whole nother world, and you created an event called DevNet Create as a new initiative. A new pioneering effort. >> Absolutely. >> Why a new event? What's the big news here? >> It's really interesting. I think that what's going on is in the world of, kind of, the infrastructure, right? So the infrastructure has our networking, our compute, our storage, and all of that is changing in that it's becoming programmable, and so once it's programmable, you're like, "What?" My infrastructure has APIs. Once it has APIs, you can do things like DevOps, right? You can start to do things like really have good flexibility with how you deploy your applications, you can get much more rapid deployment of apps, and you can get, just, fundamentally, different, and improved applications. So, the big thing that's going on is that there's this huge industry transformation in front of us, and the transformation is in how applications meet infrastructure, and this has happened as applications go to the cloud, then how applications meet the cloud, apps are changing, right? Then as the infrastructure becomes programmable, there's APIs into it, so there's this really kind of fresh ground that's ahead of us, and we can make the most of this, and that's what DevNet Create is all about. >> You know, people always ask me, this is our eighth year doing The Cube, "John, you and Dave do such a good job with The Cube." "You always pick the events that are going to be good." (laughter) We did some when we were first on, I do parole, I mean, with Cloud Air, and nobody had heard of Cloud Air. We can sniff the trends out, and to me, I think you're onto something really big here, and this is why I'm excited to bring The Cube to your event. I know it's small, it's inaugural, and it's very community-oriented, but I think you guys are on fault line of a massive shift, and I think you're on the right side of this, and I think the app dynamics acquisition that Cisco did points to some of the things that going to give Cisco, I think, a big lift, and that is, by looking at the plumbing as being automated, certainly relevant, that's not going away, but as you move up the stack, there's going to be the need for rapid, rapid application deployment. >> Susie Wee: Absolutely. >> Conceive, build, ship in minutes. It could be automated with bots and AI and whatnot, so this is the trend. Talk about that dynamic, 'cause that requires a fundamental rethinking and reimagining of the Cloud, security, how packets move. >> Susie Wee: Absolutely. >> Do you agree with that, and obviously, you're running the event, so you probably have some bias there, but more importantly, this big trend. >> Yeah, absolutely. So, kind of the applications themselves, we take apps for granted these days, and we've had applications forever, right? But the applications are how people interact with the system, with the Cloud, with all the surfaces that they use everyday, so we know that everyone's lives have been transformed with apps, and then we also know that the Cloud has been huge. You know, work loads are moving with the Cloud. The Cloud has instant deployment, global resources, again, big stuff there as well, but that's going to shift again, right? So what happens is now that the Cloud is as awesome as it is, now that applications are great as they are, we're going to go to this next generation where the applications get even better, the Cloud gets even better, the way they meet, and therefore, the surfaces that people use get better. Let's have some examples of like, what could be better? Well, now that you have things like app dynamics, you can start to get information from your applications in the infrastructure that give you business insights, so let's say that you have your application running, and then you know how many times different APIs have been called. You know what parts of your systems, or your applications, are called the most. You know who's using them. You know how often they're being used, by whom, and so on. What order are they being used? All of this can start to give you business insight, so then you say, oh, the infrastructure's not just about delivering, compute, network, and storage, it's also about giving the insights into how people are using my stuff, so I can get business insights all of a sudden, and then it's a whole new world. >> Talk about how you got here, and your journey with Cisco being creating the DevNet and now DevNet Create, 'cause I think there's some trends in the industry, and we're going to be covering Sapphire, which is SAP's big show coming up in Orlando, and Cisco has some announcements, I know, I was brief under NDA on that so I really can't talk about it right now, but I do know for a fact it's going to be some significant innovations that's Cisco's bringing to the table, and they're an app provider. Now, they're older version, they're the big ERP, and the big software and framewares, and they announced Cloud Native with iOS development. This notion of, like a new breed of developers is not a mutually exclusive argument against IT, it's just the continuation. There's a dynamic going on between software developments and apps, and not only just on the business model side, but actually, technically. >> Yeah, absolutely. There's a few different things. So, first of all, an app developers can, so we have something called Meraki. Meraki is our wireless access points, it was a big acquisition we did a few years ago, and you can think of, you know, wireless access points as giving you connectivity, wireless connectivity, but now imagine that it also, you have APIs into it and it tells you how many mobile devices are connected. Where are they connected from? And where are the mobile devices located? If someone comes into your store, how many people have been there before? And how many people is it their first time there? So, this is all stuff that you can get from your wireless access points and you can start to do really interesting stuff. I think any app developer would love to have that information of what can I get? Who's in my store, or who's in my venue? And the infrastructure gives you that. >> And you guys run most, if not all the networks in the world. An IOT device and your other things that's connected to a network, wireless or wired. >> Yeah. >> And packets are moving around, so you have that data. >> We have that data, yes. So, yes, exactly. Cisco infrastructure is everywhere. >> But it's been hard to expose that over the years because Cisco's always had this notion that we play at a certain part of the stack and now it's almost like finally, after decades of conversations, I know from folks I talked to at Cisco, let's move up the stack. There's always been this push that does Cisco move up the stack and how? >> Yes, and basically the way that the way and the reason that Cisco can move up the stack now is because the infrastructure is programmable, so now, our kit, the network, is programmable. Now there's analytics that are being built into the network as things are running around, so like having a programmable network, having analytics, where you can either gather information together on how applications and things are being used, or a key, and then how do we move up the stack is when we work with the ecosystem. We work with the community, is that we have a developer program like DevNet, which is why we founded it, is we're going to enable those app developers to come to the world of the enterprise, so right now, when you have an enterprise, you know, who can write an awesome IOT app for a building, or for a casino, or for a mall, or for a hotel, it's whoever that hotel works with. Whatever system integrator they have, and that's all amazing, 'cause, you know, your building's instrumented, >> Yeah, so you don't have to >> Susie Wee: You know where people are. >> It's a horizontal market of developers versus a specific Cisco community, which you have to nurture in and of itself. >> Exactly. >> In the course of business, guys who know how to handle the packets and the networking gear, and know someone who's, hey, I know Cisco's a network provider, a network supplier, I just don't want to have to go get a training certification to get some data; just give it to me. >> That's right, and so what we can do is say, hey, here's the APIs, go to developer.cisco.com. Everything's there. Everything's free. Here's learning labs on how to use the different APIs. Here's use cases. We actually have kit in the clouds so we have a sandbox that lets people use stuff. If you want to write an app for a contact center, 'cause we sell contacts in our stuff, we have a contact center that you can write and deploy your app on. You don't have to buy one to test it, right? So it's really interesting when these apps hit these places, which is that, you know, you need a contact center, well, we'll have one for you. >> Here's the hard question. I want to put you on the spot and bring the heat, if you will. You guys have been great in your own ecosystem. Dominant for Cisco as a company. As you move into this new ecosystem, because ecosystems are now business-model parts of public companies. Cloud Air just went public. Ortenwer's went public. Viewelsoft. A new class of new kind of open-source companies are going public. You guys are not necessarily an open-source company. You have open-source initiatives. You have to now embrace a new kind of ecosystem. >> Absolutely. >> Where's the progress on this? How early is it? 'Cause I think that's what DevNet created to me, and Cisco is now going into a new market and being proactive. >> Absolutely >> The question is are you ready? Do you have the chops? Where are you in the progress of that? (laughter) >> We're ready. Now, it's going to take work to work with the community to get there, but let me just go back 'cause when we first started DeveNet three years ago, we said, hey, are those networkers and those infrastructure guys, are they really ready for programmability and software? We didn't know, and then we had out first DevNet event, and it was packed. We're like, oh my gosh, these guys are so ready, and we didn't know that at the time, so we've made good progress there, but now that we're sitting there to work with the community, I think that I'm hoping that they're going to be embracing so we're certainly going to be open. We've actually opened up, kind of, the thinking within Cisco. We've done a lot of cultural change within Cisco because people have seen the success of DevNet and of the developers outside in the world who are actually jumping in and ready to embrace programmability. >> So, it's the old data. It started home. What you did. >> It started home. >> You did with your own core. >> And then used that to then build out. >> And you guys have apps, we know, again, we go to a lot of events. I've seen Cisco around in a lot of some of the open-stores events. I was at the Nix Foundation. You guys had some presence, but it seemed like a toe in the water. How are you guys going to go big in this? >> That's what changed, is actually Cisco has had some little developer efforts and a lot of heroics done by people within Cisco. Like, hey, I have this great product, I want to run a hackathon, right? So, we've had all of these heroic attempts, but until DevNet came along, we didn't have one centrally funded program with a mandate from the CEO to go and get that programmability and develop our ecosystem out there. That's what we had now for the last three years with DevNet, so now is we go to the next layer. You're right, we do have the people who are out working with the Cloud Native, working with OpenStock, working with OpenDaylight, working in the SDN, the Lennox foundation, and what we're doing is now bringing that to the next level. Again, adding the DevNet power, now that we have kind of established our base to really embrace this, so we hope that we're going to provide a lot more, kind of, foundation so that we can go big in these cases. >> How big is the cultural change within Cisco, just give some color without giving away too many trade secrets, but I know Cisco have, and a lot of my friends worked there I've known for years, from the beginning, I've been intimate with the company's culture, and they've been a case study of dominance, just the way their competitiveness has been, the products have been great. They run the networks, but now they have to move into this open source and the community world. Talk about some of the cultural changes. Any conversations? The CEO, when you talk to him, what's the conversation like there? >> I just met with our CEO, Chuck Robins, a couple weeks ago, updated him on our progress. He actually, he an John Chambers, together, helped found DevNet, so they understand the need for it, and they helped break down the barriers and create the funding and the organization to do it, and we had to do some re-orgs to get it going originally. >> It's not just lip service, they're putting their muscle behind it. >> They're putting their effort behind it and they're dedicated to it, and they understand it. Chuck is fully behind it. He sees the importance of programmability. He actually understands the applications meet infrastructure and the transformation that can happen there, so he is super supportive all the way. He sent me a text this morning and said, "Yeah, when is DevNet Create again?" >> Great. >> So he's on top of it. He knows what we're doing. >> We'll have him on The Cube for sure. >> Absolutely. >> So applications meets infrastructure is the DevOps ethos, and that really highlights your theme. >> It does. Now, some of the other cultural change that has happened is, for example, we have something called systems engineers in our sales force. So what happens is, in our sales force, we have technical folks. We have 6,000 sales engineers around the world. Systems engineers, and they understand the technical side. They're all taking DevNet training. They're taking DevNet learning labs. They're learning to code. They're learning to use our APIs and now, the other thing is that they're now running DevNet events around the world. These guys are not only getting trained, but they are running their own developer events, and so they've picked it all up. This is a transformation that, you know, we've partnered with them on, and that's really changed what they're doing and they're realizing that, hey, there's a conversation, like, we can finally have the assets to help out app developers, and the app developers, they do need help. People have been rating mobile apps for years. Not that many of them are making money, right? The question is how do you do good to those app developers? How do you bring those app developers into the enterprise? How do you take it and make sure that when you have the newest things, like... >> I've always said: feed it data. >> Feed it data. >> Data is a great life blood of applications. >> Absolutely, and so then the applications have data. Then you start to analyze it, you get the intelligence from it right there, and then all new insight. >> The automation around provisioning all that network plumbing is really, really hard and nuanced. If you can automate that away, developers will just have parade to your door. >> Absolutely. >> Alright, so, personal question. You've been very successful in building DevNet. Building developer programs is everyone's holy grail right now. There are people in companies: "We got to build a developer program." "Throw some money at it." They might have some lip service from the CEO or full commitment. What is the key to success. To get the companies and to actually conceive, to build, and deploy a successful developer program for a company? >> Yeah, that's a good question. I have to say that building the developer program is not as easy as you would think. I would think it should be easy, like get out there, go find some web service that's running free developer community stuff >> Someone creates a free code. >> Give 'em code, and that's it? But it's actually not that at all. There is actually a few things that have been key to what we've done. One of them, and actually, I spoke about this at the Evan's developer relations conference a few weeks back, but one of the keys there is just be entrepreneurial. You actually have to be an entrepreneur even if you're in a big company, then you especially have to be entrepreneurial. >> John: You got to hustle harder. >> And what I mean is you have to hustle hard and, with few resources, you have to show quick wins fast, and you have to make bets, right? What are the kind of things we do? Well, when we first started, we actually didn't have an organization. It was me. It was a couple rebels from different parts of the org who are like, we need this, and we were making proposals. >> Skull and crossbones kind of thing going on, yeah, big time. >> And we pretended that, hey, just pretend that we have a full-blown developer program. What would you do? What we did was, we went out there, we went made developer.cisco.com, we made one site, we brought all of the APIs into one place so that developers could access it, and it was just going through and kind of building that site, which is really hard in a big company like Cisco with APIs all over the place, and we just silently launched it, and then people started discovering it. Like, oh, all of Cisco's stuff is here. Holy Cow. That was one thing. >> Go humble early. Learned from Lennox himself. >> And we actually got kind of blasted on the Twittershpere because actually on our developer page, we had one section that was actually going to just product information and not having APIs in it, and so this guy was like, that's all product stuff. That's not about APIs, so we got blasted. We were like holy crap, he's right. We went, we changed it. Got rid of all that. >> That's agile. >> And fixed it and then he became our biggest fan, right? We changed and we learned from feedback from the community. >> You applied the entrepreneurial hustle. Hustle hard and make bets. >> Susie: Make bets. >> What's your big bet that your hustling now for, and I mean hustle in a good way, DevNet Create. What's your bet? >> Our first bet back then, big bet, was the DevNet's own at Cisco Live, was let's have a developer conference at Cisco Live. We have no idea if people are going to be interested, but let's just do it. So, we got second floor of Mosconi's. >> You're going big or going home. >> Yeah, exactly, so we like boom! Kind of got the same place they have Google IO and Dreamforce. We got the space, kind of created it, didn't know if anybody would come. It was jampacked. We're like, oh my God. John Chambers came by. He told his whole staff, like, you guys have to see what's happening. The DevNet zone's now the busiest part of Cisco Live. That was our big bet then, and fortunately it paid off, and I think that's what made us part of the fabric that let us continue on, but now our big bet is DevNet Create. It's about applications hitting the infrastructure and really ensuring that the infrastructure is giving benefit to app developers. >> John: Real benefit. >> Real benefit. It's not just for the sake of business, it's actually because, to me, there's a real inflection going on in the industry. Apps can just ride on top, and then just do whatever the infrastructure can provide for them, and that'll get us to one place, but once you really think about it, then you say, okay, where does the data for the apps need to sit? Oh my gosh, there's data sovereignty issues, so it can't just sit anywhere. How do we scale out? Like, when we scale out, and you could just say, oh yeah, just go buy it and Amazon, Google, someone else will take care of it for me. Well, some of it will, and you should absolutely use... We're using all of those >> The policy stuff. >> As well, but there's policy, there's, you know, so when you're really working to scale out and understand what's critical for your business, there's more that can be had, and then now you can go to the next level of where apps can get value added business insights from the network like what we were talking about before, and then, a really big thing is just when I kind of think forward to the world of IOT, and you say again, this building is now IOT enabled. This building has APIs. It's the infrastructure, and app developers would love to get access to that. >> Peter Barris and I were talking at The Cube about a new standard we want to see. All data should be presented in less than 100 milliseconds from any database. >> Susie: Nice, nice. >> That's a moon shot, but let's think about that. That's what we want. Okay, so final question. Congratulations on all your success, and I do believe that a trend is there, the question is when will it get there. Upcoming for DevNet Create, what do you hope to bring to the community? What do you want the community to look for and expect? And what will they see? >> Absolutely. What we want is, we hope that DevNet Create is just a catalyst for this to happen. For this transformation that's happening, and we want it to help drive things with the community in a faster way than if we just let it go itself. There's basically going to be two tracks at DevNet Create. One is on Cloud and DevOps, and the other is on IOT and apps. With Cloud, there's all these questions of how are we going to take monolithic legacy apps and turn them into micro surfaces? We have the world of containers. We have the world of container orchestration and everything there. That's all really hot stuff, but the way that we move this together, bring it into full production and get all of the apps really embracing that is key. What we're hoping will happen at DevNet Create is that the world of Cloud developers, the world of app developers, IOT developers will come together with those that are working in DevOps, those in the infrastructure to really understand what are the benefits that can happen across these layers? I'm not saying that every app developer needs to become an infrastructure developer, right? I'm not saying that every developer must be an operator, but there's benefits that can happen in the right way. Really, what we're hoping is that with DevNet Create, we can drive that conversation at the event itself and then continue with the ongoing community. >> And who are you targeting specifically to the event? Non-Cisco developers or Cisco developers with a plus, with a twist, or? >> Non-Cisco developers as well as some Cisco developers as well, but it's really about the industry. Where as when you go to a traditional DevNet event, you're going to be hearing all about Cisco APIs and Cisco products and how they play together in these solutions, but at DevNet Create, 90% or more of the talks are non-Cisco. We had a call for papers. I was really nervous when we had the call for papers and I was super relieved because we had great papers come in. Actually, the only problem is that we didn't have enough slots for the great papers. We even had to turn around some really good ones. Turn away some really good ones. We have a really strong agenda, and we actually said no to more Cisco talks because we wanted it from the ecosystem. We have people from Google, from Amazon, from Howdy. There's just lots of... >> And so will this be a Cisco event going forward? Or an industry event? Because there's a trend in the event world where people are going in for the big DreamForce and the big one show, big tent, zillion people, and then a series of industry shows around open-source communities with governance. Are you guys going to make this a Cisco managed show? Or thinking about opening it up to the community to manage? What's your thoughts on the vision of that? >> We're hoping to catalyze it. We will continue to have our other Cisco DevNet events that are really about the Cisco APIs themselves and really training and bringing along that core community, and we invite all the developers to attend that as well, but we really view DevNet Create to really be an event for the community. We'd be open to doing this with cosponsors and hosting it with others. >> So you're open. >> We're open. We're actually doing this with Lennox Foundation as well, so we have them involved. Many of them are on our advisory board. We are very open. We're actually working with SiliconANGLE and The Cube. We want to do it in the most open way as possible. >> As I said, we like to sniff out all the hot events. This is one inaugural event. I think it's really, really important because it really shows Cisco's commitment to open source in a way that's been toe in the waters in the past, like you said, little rebels in the organization doing their thing trying to get the word inside Cisco, but now with the cultural shift, I think you guys have it with app dynamics. There's a business path. I see a path there and I think the community only benefits. >> Absolutely, and if the community benefits, and our goal is to actually make our community and our developers successful. That's actually our only goal. For them to be successful in their careers and their business, and that will, in turn, make Cisco successful, but really, it's really about making the community successful. >> I mean if you think about the 5G end-to-end. I mean, end-to-end architectures are winning. We do a whole segment on end-to-end, but to make it end-to-end work that's not just one company, you'd need to have a strong developer community, and I think this is kind of where I see the event's importance is true network transformation and programmability. The ethos of DevOps needs to go to the next level so cars can program themselves. I mean, everything. 5G's coming too, so a lot of new stuff happening. >> Absolutely. I don't think any major industry transformation happened with one company alone. It really takes a community, right? Be it a community of product makers, a community of solutions providers, surface providers, and consumers themselves. This is really about the community. >> Susie, congratulations on all your success, and we're looking forward to seeing DevNet Create's inaugural opening in May. Appreciate it, and great to talk to you about some of the mega trends and your perspective on that. >> And thank you for helping to drive this vision and agenda.
